You left the Storybook open to page thirty-three, “The Tale of the Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.” It is fitting, I suppose.

Oh, Jakob, I miss you. For years I looked after you, protected you, mocked you—and through all my cruelty and conditional love, you stayed.

You did not judge me, Jakob, though I often judged you. You loved me. You respected me. You had faith that I would always protect you, and I have failed.

Jakob... I failed. I failed you.

“The Tale of the Sleeping Beauty in the Wood”... oh, Jakob. The Forest has defeated me, and I cannot save you. The Queen, the witch, the spirit, the curse, the Wood... you are beyond me. You have gone where I cannot follow.

Jakob, I miss you. I wish I had told you how I love you all those years I had the chance.

You left the Storybook open to page thirty-three, and I have yet to close it, for while it’s open I can pretend you will return.
