I was a child

Written: September 10, 2007
I was just a child that day,
a little girl in school.
I didn’t know what happened then,
but now I do.
It seemed the whole world was burning,
that the sky was scarred and bloody,
that the wounds would never heal.
I couldn’t understand such hatred then,
and even now, as a woman grown, I can’t quite comprehend.
I’ve lived through hurricanes and desert wars,
but I’m mostly a child of peace.
I don’t see why we can’t all get along
and let each other be.
I was just a child that day,
but even then I did not grow.
The pain seemed so far away,
but the fear—it clung close.
I’ve been there since,
seen where those buildings stood.
I couldn’t think of a thing to say
and tears welled in my throat.
And our pain, it grew.
And our hearts, they wept.
But we rose from the ashes,
and here we stand.
I was just a child that day,
A little girl in school.
I didn’t know what happened then.
But now I do.
It seemed the whole world was burning,
But now the smoke has cleared.
I am not a little girl anymore,
No longer lost for words.
I have stood where those towers fell.
