They tell him his name is Colin Hart. He has no choice but to believe them. They say they are his parents and they love him, that he was in the dark for almost half a year.
Nothing about them is familiar. He remembers words and what they mean, he knows how to talk—but not another single thing. They have pictures and he recognizes his face, but no one else’s. They mention people and places, assure him he is their son.
            But he can’t remember.
Amnesia. He knows that word: not whole. Incomplete. The disappointment is obvious on their faces.
He doesn’t remember his life or his family or his friends. They say his name is Colin, that it’ll all come back with time.
He doesn’t feel like Colin. He feels empty. It’s so hard, all the things he can’t remember, all the memories lost.
Sometimes, when the woman who says she is his mother cries, he wishes he’d stayed in the dark.

Her gasp as the knife plunged into her eye doesn’t haunt 494. He’d killed before, violently, so she was just another in a line. Ames White doesn’t remove the explosive at 494’s brainstem, though he does stop the timer.
“You’re mine, 494,” White tells him. “Do as I say—or die.”

494 is sent after transgenics. He kills each target. He’s sent after humans; they are no hardship.
He is a predator, a hunter. He was created for this. He is good at it.
He’s kept at a facility very similar to Manticore. Sometimes, he forgets he ever left.

“You should have a name,” White tells him one day after another successful mission.
494 doesn’t respond, just watches White pace.
            “Any suggestions?” White asks.
“452 called me Alec, sir,” 494 answers. “For smart-aleck.”
White cants his head, thinking. “No, I don’t like that. You’re Cain, now.” He smiles coldly. “Do you know that story, Cain?”
“Yes, sir,” he replies. “Cain killed his younger brother Abel and was marked by a higher being called Yahweh.”
            White nods, smirking.

It’s really no different from any other name he’s worn. He’s been Michael and Simon and Kurt and Alec—Cain’s just another part.
White visits him more after naming him. He talks incessantly, telling Cain about his childhood and his job and his family. He tells Cain about the Familiars and how Max was humanity’s last hope.
Cain thinks he should care, but he doesn’t. Max is long dead and humans are nothing.

White gives orders and Cain follows them. He sucks White’s cock and begs White to fuck his ass because White commands it.
White thinks he doesn’t know, but the explosive was taken out weeks ago.
When White is loose and sated and mostly asleep, Cain snaps his neck.
            It’s his most satisfactory kill.
He takes his time leaving, shedding Cain as he goes. He’ll need a new name and a destination.
Somewhere warm. He’s so tired of the cold. He picks Florida and doesn’t think to look back.
He names himself Daimyo because he’s finally his own lord.

“You need to understand, sweetheart,” Mom used to say when Dad failed to show again. “Your father has important work to do. He loves us very much, but other people need him even more than we do.”
Ephram would nod, giving her a brave smile. Big boys weren’t babies, and only babies cried when Dad missed their parties or games or recitals. Mom was always there, anyway.
And because Dad was never home, Mom asked Ephram for help with Delia. Mom needed him to be a big boy.
So Ephram would let Mom kiss his forehead and explain why Dad wasn’t going to be there. Dad was important, and he helped people—so Ephram contented himself with Mom and Delia.

Logan wonders if he has a chance against Alec. Alec is funny and attractive and smart, and Max’s own kind. He’s just as strong as her, if not stronger, and he understands where Max came from in a way Logan never can.
She says she hates him, but she spends so much energy on Alec—more than she ever has on Logan. They spend time at work and on transgenic business—and the virus has totally fucked up any relationship Logan and Max could have had.
He wishes he could blame Alec for that, but he knows better. Alec isn’t responsible for his actions at Manticore, anymore than Max is. Max isn’t so forgiving, but Logan’s sure that’s more to do with her than Alec.
Alec looks to humans for companionship, for fun. But Logan’s watched him with Max. She’s the only person he actually respects. He cares about Joshua and Joshua’s opinion, but Alec only goes to Max for help.
Apparently, Max even gave Alec his name.
No, Logan decides. He doesn’t have a shot. Not anymore. He can’t compete with Alec, so it’d be easiest on everyone if he just bowed out. Just became Eyes Only, handed out missions.
He wishes he could hate Alec. It’d make everything so much easier.

I love "to be my own king," especially Alec's distance when he explains the name White chooses for him. It's perfect.

"to be my own king" wasn't what I was expecting; still, I liked it, especially how White couldn't keep his distance once he'd given Alec a name.
Good job.

Very nice. Really liked the attention to Alec picking a destination by temperature.
