There is one secret Mary takes with her into the darkness: she had another child, her first child, as a scared girl on the run, alone and terrified, four years before she ever met John.
A second secret is the child’s father: her own daddy.
A third secret is the child’s name, though that doesn’t really matter—the baby(a sweet girl) died with a whimper a few moments after birth. Almost stillborn and three months early, the babe was a small, pitiful thing. Mary wept for days.
When they told her John’s baby was a boy, Mary insisted his name be Dean. John nodded, tears of happiness marring his cheeks.
Dean, she whispers, cradling her son, peering down at his perfect little face. Dean, my own sweet boy.
His sister would be eleven today, my sweet girl, she cries.
