When Sam left, Jessica was a month late. After she went back to sleep that night, she dreamed of reading Shane to a little boy with Sam’s eyes. He couldn’t be more than eight and he was curled up in her arms, nestled against her chest.
It was a good dream, one of the best she ever had.
She woke on Saturday to an empty apartment and missed Sam so fiercely it ached.
But he’d be back. He said he would, and Sam never made a promise he didn’t keep. She just had to be patient and wait.

She bought a test Saturday afternoon, when she made the weekly grocery run. It was a lonely chore that day—usually Sam went with her. She also picked up the stuff to make cookies. He was better baker by far, but it’d be fun.  It’d keep her busy, too busy to wonder and worry.

Jessica had an exam on Monday. She couldn’t focus enough to study, damn that Dean Winchester. What right did he have to bust back into Sam’s life?
The caring, compassionate part of her whispered, NateGreg. She hushed it up.
Saturday, Jessica crawled into bed at nine and pulled Sam’s pillow to her, buried her face in it. She cried herself to sleep.

She had the dream again, reading Sam’s favorite book to their son. She kissed his hair and heard Sam rattling around the kitchen.
“She hungry?” Jessica called, tickling their boy.
“I got it, Jess,” Sam responded.
“Mama!” the little boy said, bouncing in her lap. “Read! ’s’best part!”
            She laughed and complied.

Sunday evening, Jessica finally tried the test.
Before she learned the results, though, the shadow-man with golden eyes came for her.
Samuel Winchester—Mary’s son—the shadow-man said, will never have children. It touched her face. You remind me so much of Mary. You have her fire.
Jessica tried jerking away and it smiled. Goodbye, Jessica Lee Moore. Know that your death made a difference.
She didn’t ask, A difference in what? though she wanted to.

Jessica wished she knew her babies’ names. Wished Sam could explain what the shadow-man meant.
But she died with one last look at Sam and—
Guess Nate’ll be an only child now.

“You’re not gonna catch ‘em, Vic,” his brother drawled through the phone, a voice he hadn’t heard in six years. “If I failed, you really think you’ll succeed?”
“I told you not to use this line for anythin’ but emergencies,” Victor growled back.
“Just wanted to let you know I’m in prison. It’ll be a few months, but I’ll get back to chasin’ them fuckers.”
Victor closed his eyes. “Gordon,” he sighed. “Don’t contact me except for emergencies, alright? You make me tired.”
“I’m not crazy, Victor,” his younger brother said earnestly. “I know what I saw that night, what I’ve seen since then.”
Victor glanced around furtively, but thankfully he was alone in the hall. “You’re a murderer,” he hissed. “A serial killer. And only the fact that you’re my mama’s son has kept me from takin’ you in myself.” Victor flipped his phone shut and slammed his fist into the wall.
If he’d been home that night, Rosalind would still be alive, Gordon would still be sane, and Daddy wouldn’t have walked away. Victor knew it.
            If only he’d been home…
Victor took a deep breath and strode back into the office. The Winchesters had been sighted again—he had work to do.

Prompt: Sam's on his knees cradling his brother's bleeding body, saying Don't leave me, please, Dean, don't leave me, but Dean's heart stutters to a stop anyway... and then something snaps in Sam's head, a switch flips, and the sky begins to burn.

They watch the sun set, huddled together beneath the sky. No one knows it’s the last dusk the world will ever see.

It began in the southwest, near the Painted Desert. For awhile, no one knew why. But slowly the pieces fit all together—by then, though, it was far too late.
By the time the truth came out, Dean Winchester was dead and the sky afire.

Samuel Winchester, everyone always said, such a lovely boy. Such a great future ahead of him. He’ll go far.
Nobody ever said those things about his brother. They figured he’d end up in prison, or get himself killed young.
Sam sure did have a destiny. And Dean died before he ever turned thirty.

Dean’s death was an accident. The shot was meant for Sam. Gordon Walker convinced some other hunters that Sam needed to be put down for the good of the world.
Dean had spent the better part of twenty-nine years protecting Sam. He didn’t care about Sam’s powers or the fate Old Yellow-Eye spouted off about. Taking that bullet was his first, second, and third nature.
He died swiftly, with no pain. And Sam, after twenty-five years of having a brother always there, was left alone.
Gordon Walker and his five followers died screaming, the flesh peeling itself from their bones.
And the sky began to burn.

Sam has no friends. When Bobby refused to give the Winchesters up, Gordon killed him. Pastor Jim and Caleb were long dead. Joshua and Ellen and Jefferson had families of their own to take care of.
After Gordon, hunters kept coming after him. He seared them all to ash. He didn’t hesitate or flinch, and he didn’t regret. Regret died with Dean.

Dean is dead. Sam can’t find him anywhere. He keeps looking, but Dean is gone.
Sam hopes, when he’s lucid, that Dean’s with Mom and Dad. That they’re a family again. It’s all Dean ever wanted.

It started in the southwest United States. And it spread, up and down the continent, engulfing North America. But it didn’t stop. Within weeks, the western hemisphere was a wasteland. No one could explain why or how. By the time a month had passed, Europe and Asia were desert, too.
Humans died by the bucketloads. Race, religion, and age didn’t matter.
And through it all, the sky continually burned.

The sun never rises or sets. It can’t be seen through the flames. Soon, there is no one to look for it, anyway. And Sam wanders the US, always searching for Dean.

Dean thinks, sometimes, that in another world he and Victor Hendrickson could have been friends. He doubts that he and Gordon Walker would’ve been, though.
He respects the FBI agent. Hendrickson’s doing what he thinks is right, trying to bring in a dangerous psychopath. But—a mark in his favor—he’d let Sam go. If Dean turned himself in and said he’d made Sam do everything, Hendrickson would set Sam free.
Gordon, though, wants Sam dead, won’t stop till Sam’s gone. And that is a sin that Dean will never forgive.
Before that graveyard, before Jake, before Madison, Sam was not a killer. In Dean’s eyes, he still isn’t. And Dean’ll do anything—anything—to keep Sam innocent. If he ever sees Gordon again, he’ll prove the bastard right.
I didn’t blink, Gordon said, about putting down his baby sister. And neither would you.
Dean will never, ever kill Sam. And he’ll kill anyone who tries.

Nicely done. :)

How warm it was

Poor Jess. It’s so sad to think of all that could have been for her and Sam.

chains that bind

Ooh, what an intriguing, cool twist!

nomad aflame

This one makes me ache for both boys.

Favorite lines:

Dean had spent the better part of twenty-nine years protecting Sam. He didn’t care about Sam’s powers or the fate Old Yellow-Eye spouted off about. Taking that bullet was his first, second, and third nature.

Yeah, that’s Dean, all right.

The sun never rises or sets. It can’t be seen through the flames. Soon, there is no one to look for it, anyway. And Sam wanders the US, always searching for Dean.

Oh, Sam.

I sing for you

Good look at how Dean views Victor and Gordon differently, and the lengths he’ll go to in order to keep Sam safe.

OMG. I think I just sat at my desk doing nothing for a good 5mins or so after reading these drabbles.

How warm it was
This one was incredible sad, the demon managed to take so much away from Sam without him knowing, and poor Jess.

chains that bind
heh, I like the idea of this one. I had to read it twice, I couldn't believe it that you made Henricksen and Gordon brothers at first. But it is a brilliant concept. I hope you will be able to expand upon this one day.

I love apocalsype stories, and this one is no exception. This one sent a chill down my spine when I read it. I could clearly imagine the events unfolding - that is how powerful your writing is.

iamstealthyone pretty much summed up what I wanted to say about this piece.

He didn’t hesitate or flinch, and he didn’t regret. Regret died with Dean.

Lovely line. Such a poignant four words.

And Sam wanders the US, always searching for Dean.

That makes me sad. Sam sounds so lost. All he wants is his big brother.

I didn’t blink, Gordon said, about putting down his baby sister. And neither would you. Dean will never, ever kill Sam. And he’ll kill anyone who tries.

That is so very, very true. I was watching “Bloodlust” yesterday and I can still picture Dean’s unbelieving look when he asks, “You did what?” as Gordon explains that he killed his own sister.

Awesome fics, as always.

Breaking us again, I see.
Poor Jess. To think of all the things you could've been...wiped out because one demon had the hots for your boyfriend...
This scenario is one I can see far too easily, and it's also one of the most hurting things I can think of concerning the show.

chains that bind
Now that'd be a neat little trick. Certainly a thrilling idea...and considering how damn little we know about Gordon Walker and Victor Hendricksen (sp? Damn this show and its ambiguously named characters!), anything's still possible.
I enjoyed this little snippet quite a good deal.

nomad aflame
Dean keeps Sam tethered to humanity, Sam keeps Dean grounded. Take away one and the Hell's Gates opening would seem more pleasant by far.
Again, you chill with just a few precious details. And Dean would so take the bullet meant for Sam. At least this time, he didn't suffer.

I sing for you
This is a lovely insight into the characters, ringing true. Certainly something to meta about...;)

Thank You.

Oooh I love the idea of Victor and Gordon being brothers. That would make such a cool dynamic and the backstory would be awesome. :)

How warm it was:
How heartbreaking - he never got the chance to propose like he was going to, and she never got the chance to give him this news!

Chains that bind:
Oh, what a great backstory to make Hendrickson a part of - losing family like that, it could give him his drive and his sense of justice, just like it did Dean (but in a totally different way)

nomad aflame:
beautiful language, and an absolutely hearbreaking look at post-Dean Sam.

I sing for you:
Great fit with the canon of "Jus in Bello." And I love Dean's reasoning - there are other things about Victor and Gordon that factor in, but the MAIN thing is Sam (as always).

Awesome job!
