            It’s gonna end, and that’s a promise.

Three days till: Dean’s vanished in the middle of the night. Sam wakes to an empty room.

It’s gonna end, and everything’ll be better. You’ll see.

Two days till: Sam’s tracked Dean to the Grand Canyon. How he got there with no car, from half a continent away, Sam doesn’t know.

It’s gonna end. Just you wait.

One day till: Sam’s followed Dean, and they watch the dawn together.

            It’s gonna end… and it’ll be a relief.

No day till: a shadow comes for Dean, blacker than black, cold as Jack Frost’s breath.

            It’s gonna end…

Day after: there is a sunrise. Sam watches it alone, then glances over at the bed, where Dean’s stretched out, chest rising and falling.

            It’s gonna end… don’t fight it.

Two days after: Sam summons the shadow back and demands it return his brother. The shadow laughs.

It’s gonna end, and I’m fine with that.

Three days after: there is no sunrise, anywhere on Earth. Sam doesn’t know what he’s doing, and he doesn’t care. He’ll get Dean back, one way or another.

It’s gonna end… so just let it.

Fifteen days after: Dean’s eyelids blink open.

It’s gonna end, Sammy. Let me go.

Sixteen days after: the sun rises, warming long-frozen dirt.

It’s gonna end, finally. Don’t hang on.

Seventeen days after: Dean says a single word. Sam clutches him close, whispering thanks to anyone listening.

            Didn’t it end?

Twenty days after: Dean is back to his old self, soul intact. He’s furious, but got no room to talk. Sam just basks in his presence, feeling whole again.

            Sammy… what have you done?

Twenty-one days after: they get back on the road, pointing the Impala north. Sam’s sitting shotgun and all is right with the world.

Sam gets Dean back by denying the world sunlight and warmth? I don't know why a demon would care, but it has a very Demeter-Persephone-Hades feel to it. Unless he got Dean back in return for making it dark and cold so that the demons could have free reign for a while. Great story, as always.

Dean really has no right to complain given what he's done for his family. He'd have to be crazy in the crazy way to think that Sam won't do everything in his power to save him.

I like how you structured this, alternating between Sam's actions and Dean's thoughts. And I like that Sam saved Dean. :)

Nicely done.

I think I love your "empowered Sam"-stories.
This is no exception.

The dancing between the 'countdown' and the thoughts/dialogue is something that works well here. It's distanced from everything that's happening and at the same time strangely intimate.

Demon Jesus Sam rocks.
Thank you.
