He hears howling sometimes, instead of that horrific shrieking. He likes to think there are still animals out there, besides the deer and birds, that aren’t infected. Something that comes out at night, still free from the virus.

He hears howling sometimes, instead of that horrific shrieking. He likes to think there are still animals out there, besides the deer and birds, that aren’t infected. Something that comes out at night, still free from the virus.
Curled up next to him, Sam whimpers at the howls. He doesn’t know if she wants to go join the wolves, or if she’s just frightened. He rubs her side, offering what comfort he can.
He likes the howling. It sounds serene, a family singing together. It reminds him that other things are surviving in this Hell.
He hears the howling and knows there’s still a chance.
