Yeah, Dean knows about hunting. For Supernatural, this 'verse was canon until the moment John died (well, without all the stuff we've learned about Mary and her family since season 4). Same with Harry Poter--until Dumbledore tells Remus he had a sister, it was totally canon. For Harry himself and the war, it would've still been canon.
I can't remember what I had intended for this 'verse. I have this in my notes:
Dean’s fifteen and Sam’s eleven, and they start the same year as Harry Potter.
Remus becomes the DADA teacher, with Quirrel as his assistant.
I never did figure out which House Dean&Sam would be in.
