Castiel does not wish to fight Dean. Uriel is pleased by battle, no matter who the battle is against, but Castiel is not a warrior who enjoys war. Dean, his brother, and the demon will protect the girl to the death, and only Dean is not to be harmed.
Uriel attacks the moment Sam says they can’t have Anna. He goes straight for Sam and the demon meets him halfway. Uriel reaches into the vessel and drags the demon out, destroying it.
Sam tries to pull Uriel away and he slaps the abomination down. Dean growls and punches Uriel; Uriel’s human body loses balance, hitting his knees on the floor.
Castiel does not wish to fight. He must follow God’s word. He saved Dean from Hell, he has spoken with Dean, he has admitted to Dean things unspoken to his own brothers.
Uriel rises and grips Dean around the neck. “I can’t kill you.” Uriel holds Dean aloft. “But I can take you out of the game.”
Dean struggles, while Uriel places a hand to his brow, sending him to sleep.
“Dean!” Sam yells from the ground, fear making his voice sharp.
Uriel turns to him. “I told you, demonspawn—the instant you become more trouble than you’re worth.”
Castiel has followed God’s word from his beginning. God has commanded Anna Milton die; she is a danger to the war-effort, and she will ascend straight to Heaven.
Uriel advances on Sam, who leaps to his feet, hand splayed outward—trying to use his demon-given ability.
Castiel closes his eyes for a moment before saying, Goodbye, Father.
He leaves the human body, the devout man who prayed to be a boon to God. He attacks Uriel from behind, taking him by surprise. Castiel! Uriel shouts.
Uriel is older, more powerful, one of the greatest of the angels. But Castiel is desperate, and as he weeps, he kills his brother.
“What?” Sam gapes. “What just happened?”
Castiel returns to the man Dean deemed a holy tax-accountant. “We must gather Dean and Anna, and flee somewhere safe.”
Sam crawls to his brother, lifting Dean’s head. “Dean!” he says, looking warily at Castiel. “Dean, wake up!”
“He will remain asleep for some time,” Castiel tells him. “Fetch Anna Milton—we must go.”
“Where’s Ruby?” Sam asks, standing.
Castiel says, “Uriel destroyed her.”
Sam looks sad at the news, but Castiel has greater worries. “I am taking Dean somewhere safe.” He stares up at Sam. “Get the girl and bring her, or come with me, or stay here and be purified.”
“Wait,” Sam says, striding through the cabin. He returns with Anna at his side. She glances at the bodies and then meets Castiel’s eyes. “Thank you,” she says softly.
Castiel looks away. “We must leave by air,” he tells Sam. “If we stay on the ground, they will be able to track us.”
Sam scoffs, kneeling by Dean. “You expect to carry us all?”
“I can transport this body and Dean with ease. Anna will be no hardship.” Castiel pauses, letting the words soak into Sam. “But you—you are tainted.”
Sam’s flinch is small but Castiel notices. After a moment, he says, “Take them. I’ll get the car and lose the demons, then meet up with you somewhere.”
Anna speaks up with, “My parents have a cabin in the Appalachians.”
Castiel nods. “That will do.” He settles at Dean’s side opposite Sam. “When you leave, take Uriel’s human with you. He will be fine by tomorrow. After you are gone, I will purify this building, to erase what happened here.”
“Okay,” Sam agrees. Anna tells him the address of her parents’ cabin and he commits it to memory.
Sam touches Dean’s cheek, traces his jaw, lightly rests his hand on Dean’s forehead. Then he stands. “Take care of my brother,” he tells Castiel.
The threat is plain. “I will.” So is his promise.
Anna gasps. “A flight of angels is coming!” she cries.
“Go,” Castiel says to Sam. “We will meet again in the mountains.” It is his first lie.
Sam grabs Uriel’s human by the shoulders, dragging him out. Once he’s at a safe distance, Castiel touches Dean’s cheek. “I will pray for your forgiveness,” he tells Anna, looking up at her.
She laughs. “Who’ll you pray to? I heard you’ve fallen.”
Castiel grips Dean tight and takes wing, leaving a purified piece of ground in his wake.

Castiel is a disapproving presence at his back. He would not want this, the angel says.
Sam snarls, No shit, Sherlock. He glares over his shoulder. Make yourself useful or go away.
Castiel’s expression is sad. I am here to offer you aid, Sam. That is something he would want.
Sam rolls his eyes, focusing back on the spell. He found it in one of Bobby’s ancient scrolls, a powerful magic that requires a blood sacrifice. It will cost a great deal and he knows what the price will be—but Lilith stole Dean in the night while Sam was away.
He will be angry, Castiel says, coming around to stand in front of Sam.
Sam looks up at him, meeting Castiel’s eyes. But he’ll be back.
Castiel nods. Yes. He will be back.
Sam slices his palm, letting blood drip into the chalice made of human bone. I need a life, he says.
Castiel sighs. I will not be forgiven.
Standing, Sam offers Castiel the knife, pure silver, sharpened by an ebony stone. It’s the only way to save Dean.
Castiel reaches out and lightly grips the smooth ivory handle. Yes, the angel whispers.
Sam watches, unflinching, as the he shoves the dagger into his body’s chest, all the way to the hilt.
Forgive me, Father, Castiel murmurs and leaves the human body. The man, leaking blood, falls to the floor, eyes unseeing. Sam leans over and pulls the dagger out, turning back to the chalice.
Castiel floats, a pale fog, before solidifying again into a human-like form. And now? he asks.
Sam ignores him, murmuring a demonic chant older than human civilization. The language rolls off his tongue with ease. He kneels again, shoving a finger into the corpse’s chest. Still murmuring, he draws out some blood. Sam finishes the incantation and waits, Castiel at his side.
He waits until dawn. But the summons doesn’t bring him Dean, and Sam’s eyes flare yellow in rage. He blinks away the golden hue and demands, Why didn’t it work?
Castiel answers sadly, Lilith is ancient.
Sam takes a deep breath, exhales, and turns sharply on his heel. So be it, he says. This plan failed. No matter.
Sam, Castiel asks. What is the plan now?
Sam looks at him. His angelic body is not much different than his human meatsuit. His wings are soot-stained. So you’ve Fallen, then?
Castiel lowers his head. I killed an innocent man, at the behest of an abomination.
Sam barks a laugh. You could’ve just said yes.
He pulls another scroll out of the pile on Bobby’s desk. I’ll need a virgin, he tells Castiel. Preferably male, but it doesn’t really matter.
Castiel sucks in a breath, his wings flaring out. What else does this plan require? His voice is shaky.
Sam pauses, spine straightening as he turns to look Castiel in his bright, unfathomable eyes. I could tell you, he says. I could tell you every single horrific, disgusting thing I need to do to get Dean back. Would it keep you from doing what I request?
Castiel doesn’t reply and Sam continues, I could charge Lilith’s frontlines. It’d destroy a good chunk of North America and kill a few hundred million people, but that’s no loss, right? It might even tear open a few hellgates, letting out the hordes. Would that be better?
Castiel flinches, looking away. Sam sighs. I’ve weighed all the options. This is the best way.
Closing his eyes, Castiel clasps his wings to his back. Softly, he asks, Does age matter?
Sam shakes his head. It won’t really affect the spell, but after puberty would be best.
When is he needed by?
Sam thinks for a moment. Dusk, tomorrow.
Castiel slowly walks to the door. Sam calls, Dean doesn’t need to know you helped. I’ll accept full responsibility.
The newly-fallen angel pauses. Thank you, Sam, he says without turning. But no. He must know the depth of my devotion. Castiel glances over his shoulder. I Fell for him.
He will forgive us, Sam assures him. Dean can’t stay angry for long.
Castiel smiles, infinitely woeful, and leaves.
Sam turns back to the scroll. He has much to prepare.
He would not want this, Castiel had said. No, he wouldn’t. If Dean knew what his salvation from Lilith will cost, he’d beg Sam to stop.
But he’s not here. He’s prisoner of the monster that had already tortured him for lifetimes, and Sam will save him.
Ruby taught him the basics and the rest he learned on his own, surpassing his teacher with ease. She’d been the sacrifice for his first attempt.
No, Dean wouldn’t like this road at all. Sam doesn’t care.
Bobby’s body frowns at him from the corner. Stop looking at me like that, Sam mutters and one of his oldest friends catches fire.
You’ll forgive me, Dean, he says. You will. He walks to the kitchen, staring out the window. For a moment, his eyes glow yellow and he looks at a world tinted golden.
He fills a glass with water, drains it down, and goes to clean up his failure.

Date: 2008-11-30 01:58 pm (UTC)Hancock's on my list of things to check out, too. And Watchmen? *grabby hands*
Oh, and according to dear hubby, there's a good chance that you'll get your laptop back as pretty as it was. :)
"Tears such as angels weep"
Oh, Castiel, Castiel, Castiel... how easy is it to imagine you falling... *smishes the guy*
You know, 'twould appear that I'm enjoying your versions of Castiel about as much as I'm enjoying your versions of empowered!Sam. There's just something so very delightfully delicious about all the possibilities the doubting angel could go...
This is no different.
"wearied wings, and willing feet"
Oh, Sam...
It's a dark place, indeed, to think about the lengths Sam could have gone (and did) in order to get Dean back. To consider this kind of a possibility, of Sam managing to enlist Castiel's help...and all the hints at what's already happened, Dean in Lilith's hands...
Oh, Sam.
Thank you.
*hugs you tightly*

Date: 2008-11-30 02:45 pm (UTC)Hancock also wasn't what I expected, but I did like how they wrapped things up. Plus, it's Will Smith; any movie he's in is bound to be good.
I find Castiel endlessly fascinating. He's like a kid, you know? He's been kept in the house away from other people besides his creepy, perfect family his whole life and suddenly, this other kid, this messy and loud and bright kid, is telling him, C'mon, dude, it'll be fun, I promise.
*shrugs*
And Sam. *shivers* He really did frighten me in "wearied wings, and willing feet". I kinda wanna write about what that spell he's working on will entail, but it'd be dark--even for me.
Thank you for reading!

Date: 2008-11-30 02:49 pm (UTC)I really hope they can back-up everything I have on Sam(my laptop). EVERYTHING I'VE EVER WRITTEN. *gulps* So much of it is horrible, but it's a record of where I've been, how I've evolved as a writer. I'd like to share that one day, with a daughter or someone, you know?
And my remaining secretses! My ideas folder, my MUSIC, my possible titlies... everything.
I'm never downloading anything ever again, that's for sure. *kicks video*

Sam and Castiel? Doing something so horrifically plausible--and this is Sam's middle ground--because their love for Dean knows no bounds.
