He is no longer their brother. He is a traitor. He chose to stand with Men, with one man in particular.
I have planned this for centuries! Zachariah thunders and Castiel climbs to his knees, spreading his wings. You petulant child!
Castiel says nothing. He'd do it again.
Zachariah's flaming sword manifests in his hand. I will see to it that your punishment fits your crime, Castiel, Zachariah promises coldly. But for now, we have a war to wage. He smirks at Castiel. And a world to remake.
Castiel closes his eyes as Zachariah severs his wings and keeps his silence. Stay, Zachariah murmurs.
Leaving Charoum to guard him, Zachariah leads the rest to Earth.
Dean, Castiel thinks, striving to reach the man where he faces Lucifer. Forgive me my failure.
There is no response from Dean and Castiel does not pray.

Dean looks at her, Colt’s kill-all gun in his grip. She’s rambling about something, and Sam’s listening to her. If it’s important, he’ll tell Dean.
Dean’s fairly certain it’s not important. He’s actually really pretty sure every word out of her mouth is a lie. Designed to trick Sam, to trap him.
Her demon-smoke mind is screaming it.
Dean looks at her, delicately slips beneath her defenses as she says—something. She wants them to leave. Her mind is chaos, dark and dank, and he finds the woman buried far down. She’s gibbering, begging to be let go. Begging for Death on his horse, scythe in hand.
Okay then. That simplifies things.
He pulls back just as carefully, reading everything there is to know about Sammy’s little pet demon, the lying puff of smoke.
She still smells like sulfur, like Hell and blood and screams, like the pale glint of bone in moonlight.
(Death doesn’t have a blade or a horse, not anymore.)
Dean looks at her, at the demon who calls herself Ruby for Sam’s benefit, her name long lost in Hell’s lake of fiery torment. He looks at her and he sees her and he smiles.
Her message delivered, she tries to leave. Sam’s already turned to face Dean, eyes wide. “What are you doing?” he asks.
She’ll betray Sam to her Lord, the glorious MorningStar locked away somewhere. She’ll hand him over like a good little slave.
“No,” Ruby whispers. “No! That’s not possible.”
Dean raises the Colt she helped make more bullets for and knows it won’t work. But it’ll hurt her, locked inside the frail human meatsuit.
She gasps at the pain. He savors the sound.
(He’s never liked traitors.)
“Dean!” Sam says. He attempts to force himself into Dean’s connection with the hellskank and Dean lightly slaps him away.
“No, little brother,” he tells Sammy. “Time for demons to learn.”
Death doesn’t have a horse or a scythe or a cowl. And Dean doesn’t need a gun.
And he hates things that want to hurt Sammy.
Ruby screams and writhes and Sam demands, “Why?”
Dean looks at him and says, Forget she ever sought you out.

It’s hard not to love her, and she’d nearly been his. But he couldn’t take the paparazzi and the bodyguards, and knowing that every man in the world would be after her. He couldn’t take the pressure: she’d be queen one day.
So he left San Francisco with his band, and he watches the wedding from his hotel room in Florida. It’s been five years since he saw her face to face, though he’s bought every magazine he can find that mentions her.
She looks happy, in her flowing white gown, standing next to some Genovian lord. She looks happy.
As they kiss, Queen and Prince Consort of Genovia, Michael turns off the TV and grabs a notebook, quickly scrawling out a song.
“Left Standing” tops the charts for eight months and every time he sings it, he wishes he’d never left San Francisco.

Victor follows his cub to Seattle, a quiet presence in the background hum of noise he knows Benny-boy can never truly silence. Ben has to roam sometimes, marking territory up and down the country. Victor understands; he used to have the whole world as his playground. He sometimes feels stifled now, that he’s spent years on the same speck of dirt.
But cubs need stability. In the ten years since he found Ben, Victor has done his best by the boy. Trained him up good and proper, and Ben was even better than Jimmy at hunting. Not quite as strong as Victor, but faster and more agile. He could scent out prey just as good, with better eyesight and equal hearing.
When Ben goes hunting, it’s a sight to behold. He does Victor proud.
They leave corpses up and down the country, stupid humans that get in the way. Ben has a more methodical way of killing, most of the time, while Victor just rips them apart.
Ben follows his instincts to Seattle, muttering something about family before taking off. Victor follows him, close enough that the cub knows he’s there, far enough back for the kid to have space.
He watches while Ben grabs humans to hunt. Smirks in the shadows as Ben finally lets loose the wildcat within to tear out their throats with his teeth, spreading them across the clearing.
While his cub is lost in bloodlust, Victor hears someone coming. He breathes deep—whoever it is, she smells like Ben. She’s almost as quiet.
He circles around her, ghosting up to her back, and snaps her neck before she ever realizes he’s there. He leaves her body on the ground and lopes to his cub.

He goes proudly to stand before his Maker, head held high.
Pride is a sin, and Zachariah is expelled from Heaven.
On Earth, rain is falling.

In Hell, there is no sunlight. Zachariah had never truly noticed how warm Heaven was. Earth, too.
Hell is not warm. Despite the flames, Hell is frozen tundra.
Or maybe, that's just his torment.

Zachariah has no way to measure time in Hell. He tries to keep his mind blank, or to remember soaring from one side of existence to another. Anything to take himself away from the cold.
He cannot help but think about what he'd planned, the reason God cast him out, like Lucifer and his legions eons before.
Zachariah is still resolved to finish what he started. Surely, eventually one of the demons will come to him, will offer to deal. Zachariah had been one of God's favored for a long time.
Of course, so had Lucifer been.

When Zachariah is dragged to the Tormentor's workroom, he is not frightened. He stood before the Throne without trembling; what demon can compare to the might of the Maker?
It is Alistair, of course, grinning with blood on his teeth and coating his hands. Alistair, who followed Lucifer without hesitation, who threw himself from the sky the moment Lucifer began to Fall.
Beside him is Dean Winchester. Or, what used to be Dean Winchester.
Zachariah smiles. Maybe the plan will succeed, just as he wanted, because this man is still here.
"You know," Alistair drawls, one hand carving up some poor unfortunate soul. "Zach. I've heard things about you. About your little schemes."
Zachariah cocks his head to the side. "I can offer you escape from this Pit," he replies.
Alistair laughs, bringing his hand to his mouth and licking at the juice coating it. "Not gonna deal with you, Zach."
Zachariah is pulled to the rack and strapped down. Alistair stands at his head and pats his cheek. "And don't worry, little brother," Alistair whispers into his ear, smirking up at the catalyst of Zachariah's plan, at the Righteous Man needed to start Armageddon. "My sweet pet here—he's not the man you're looking for. Not anymore."
In all his eons, during the War and after, when he stood before God's majesty and accepted his punishment for daring to dream, Zachariah has never felt fear.
Alistair purrs, "Meet my star pupil," and Zachariah's soul trembles.

When Castiel swoops into Hell to rescue Dean Winchester, he doesn't even spare Zachariah a glance.

I like to think that even when/if Cas rescues Dean, he's still very demony, and goes on to kill Ruby as soon as he lays eyes on her. \o/

He knows who and what she is the moment he sees her.
Ruby. Little hellspawn that spent the better part of his last year jerking Sammy around, getting Sam's hopes up. Lying and sneaking and plotting—her soulsmoke has Zach's stench all over it.
She doesn't recognize him as any more than Dean Winchester, Sam's brother. Maybe she knows what was done to him, what he did down there. Maybe she doesn't. But she makes some quip and leaves, and it's so obvious she thinks he's in the dark. Just stupid, blind Dean Winchester. Pawn.
He watches her go with the eyes Alistair ripped wide open and the angel's mark on his arm burns.
He is no one's pawn, now that he's out. Zachariah whimpered all about his grand design, the plot to release Lucifer to remake the world. Alistair laughed and Dean just kept on carving. Zachariah's intestines made such pretty pictures, traced onto his bone by his own soot-stained feathers.
He is no one's pawn, not Zachariah's or God's. Dean Winchester belongs to himself.
The angel brand burns but pain is nothing.

Sammy sleeps eventually, curled as much as he can be into Dean. Bobby is in the next bed.
Dean slips out of Sam's embrace and stands, staring down at the man who was once his everything.
Alistair ripped away all that Dean Winchester had been. He sliced Dean down into his component parts and then put him back together wrong.
He remembers Sam. Sammy. Baby brother. The world. But it's so far away, the emotions, the need.
Dean knows he traded himself away for Sam. But he can barely recall why.
No matter. Even when Alistair was playing around with his insides, he knows that the deepest part of him, the small smidgeon of his soul that went untouched, clung to this man. Kept him from losing everything.
That little hellspawn girl is waiting for Sam somewhere and Dean can feel her. He's been shoved back into this human body, but he was Alistair's favored down below.
"Sleep," he croons, reaching out with a tendril. "Don't wake before I'm back." He glances from Sam to Bobby, anchoring the command.
No, he is nobody's pawn. Not Hell's or Heaven's, not Zachariah's or Alistair or Azazel, or God's. It doesn’t matter what brand is on his skin or his soul.
He can barely remember Sam, but Sam stayed with him, down in the bowels of Hell, when everyone left him. And that little girl Ruby—whatever her scheme is, it ends now.
Dean leaves the hotel room, sealing it up so that no one—human, heavenly, or hellish—can enter and follows Zachariah's stench to Sam's summertime companion.
Checkmate.

Zuko is forced to watch, chained, up to his neck in a pool of water, as Azula roasts Sokka alive, laughing the entire time.
Then she turns her attention to him. Zuko doesn't expect to live out the night, but he swears to take Azula with him when he dies.
He fails.
