I've been wondering this for awhile: to all those who aren't American, what do you call the front passenger seat of a vehicle? We call it shotgun because of stagecoaches during the Wild West days, but what about other places?
We call it shotgun here in Canada too, at least most people I know do. Mind you, half of my family is from the US so perhaps I am not the best judge..lol
Passenger seat. Possibly because knights didn't have space for a shotgun when we were galloping around on the left hand side of the road (for the purposes of pulling one's sword from its scabbard to fight off those dastardly bandits).
I honestly can't remember. The earliest memory I have of any such concept is You can't call handlebars inside! on Two Guys and A Girl. I'm pretty sure I didn't understand at the time. It must have been a gradual thing. :$
When I started reading spn fanfiction, this shotgun-word confused me for a long time. I mean they had shotguns in the show, alright, but why was Sam in the stories riding it all the time? He was like... sitting on the gun? Really?! Why on earth? Isn't it dangerous?
My dictionary could not help me either, for it was for english english, not american english. Took a long time, before I finally understood =)
