Prompt: tumbleweed
By the time he’s twenty, Dean’s been to forty-eight states. Some he’s lived in, but some he’s just driven through. He prefers the south ‘cause it’s warmer longer, and the people are usually friendlier. Plus, he blends in more.
Sammy talks about New England and the West Coast and the future. For creative writing, his junior year, he writes a poem he calls Tumbleweed. Dean reads over it for him and tells him it’s good, but missing a spark. Sam, annoyed, tells him to do it better.
Sam gets a B on the poem, and Dean never shows him the few lines he’d jotted down.
When Dean is in Hell and Sam’s drunk, he finds a battered folder in the trunk. On a scrap of paper, in messy handwriting and faded ink, Sam reads,
lil’ tumbleweed
blown by exhaust and uncaring breeze
watch the sky,
if you please—
i’m there, too
in salty air from the coast
and stale wind from the Midwest
you’re not alone
‘lil tumbleweed
it’s my journey, too

Boaz had been boring. He didn’t excel at anything except being pretty—not at sports or school or hobbies. He was middling all the way.
Boaz went to college for a medical degree, attended for three semesters, and then dropped out. He did well enough—middling all the way—but he didn’t love it. He finally decided to stop wasting money and time, and headed out west.
Boaz had no dreams, no plans. He’d followed his parents’ path. He’d have a boring, miserable life, and then die a boring, miserable death.
Boaz stared at the Pacific Ocean. His hair was long and messy, his clothes threadbare, and he hadn’t eaten in three days. He’d never felt so alive.
He saw a help wanted sign at a brand-new sandwich shop. Boaz would never work there—too wrapped up in his father’s idea for his future.
“Name?” the owner asked, scribbling notes on a scrap of paper.
Boaz lived in the Midwest, middling all the way.
“Priestly,” he said.
The next day, before heading to work, he got his first tattoo.

Prompt: return
Three days. That’s how long Sam was dead.
The first day and night, Dean knelt in the dirt and held Sam, crying and caressing the back of his head, begging him to come back.
The second day, Dean moved him to an old building, put him on a bed, and cleaned him. He didn’t say a word to Bobby and didn’t notice anything but the blood. That night, he curled up next to his baby brother and sang a lullaby.
The third day, Bobby told him it was time to lay Sam to rest. Dean screamed at him. Dean cried some more. He confessed to Sam that he had no idea what to do.
That night, Dean made a deal. If he’d known what it would lead to… he’d make it again all the same.

Prompt: toothbrush
There is a single toothbrush on the counter. It’s a few months old, used twice a day with toothpaste, rinsed off, and put in a cup.
There is a single toothbrush in the drawer. It’s a year old, never used (anymore), and rewrapped in a fresh paper towel every couple weeks.
Sometimes, it’s put in the cup with the other toothbrush, if Jethro has a particularly bad day at work. He’ll talk then, pretending Tony is standing next to him, with that beautiful grin.
It works for a few minutes, then he goes to bed, after wrapping up Tony’s toothbrush and putting it gently in the drawer.

Mom freaked about Rachel’s grades again. And attendance. And attitude. So Rachel stormed out, found a good place to morph, and flew away.
She’s so tired of being scared, of being exhausted, of being angry. She’s furious all the time—at the Yeerks, and the Andalites, and the Controllers and the Sharing and Jake. He’s doing his best; they are all. But it’s not enough. Maybe nothing will be enough until all the Yeerks are dead, but Cassie freaked the last time Rachel suggested that. (Marco agreed, and Tobias. Ax said nothing. Jake looked sad. He always looks sad anymore.)
*Rachel?* Tobias calls. *That you?*
She ignores him and keeps flying. She’ll visit later, when she’s not such a mess. She’ll hurt anyone she sees in this mood.
She flies and flies, morphs back to human, then eagle again, and flies some more. She’s miles from home and it’s dark out, and she can’t sleep or she’ll be stuck.
She doesn’t want to be human right now. Doesn’t want to be a girl caught up in someone else’s war.
She morphs throughout the night, and then watches the dawn in her own body.
She doesn’t feel better.

Prompt: forgiven
Legend will sometimes call Edmund the Just by other names, among them The Forgiver and The Winter King. His brother and sisters will be remembered as brave and gentle and kind, as virtues brought to life. Edmund, history will say, made the hard decisions. He weighed the cost and judged between mercy and justice.
Queen Lucy the Valiant was the hope of spring. King Peter the Magnificent was the warmth of summer. Queen Susan the Gentle was the relief of autumn.
And King Edmund the Just was the biting cold of winter, the hammer and the sword of his royal siblings.
Every night, Edmund asked for the forgiveness of his brother and sisters, and the Lion. Every morning, he woke determined to earn it.
The Forgiver, he will be called. The Forgiven, the Lion will roar.

Date: 2011-05-10 11:40 pm (UTC)The Chronicles of Narnia made my heart hurt. It is wonderful, Edmund as the cold winter, the bringer of Justice, the forgiver...all because he doesn't quite believe the Lion's roar of "Forgiven". Even when sins are washed away and supposedly forgoten, the twists and turns of our soul mark their passing. And that is shone beautifully in this snippet.

Date: 2011-05-31 02:13 am (UTC)Then the Priestly backstory. Well done :)
Then the scene of Dean post-Sam's death... I can so picture these reactions and they're simply heartbreaking.
I've got to say, though, I think the sharpest piece here is the NCIS one for its understatement. This is exactly how Gibbs would grieve - so silently you would have to look very close just to catch it, but unceasing and all the way deep in his bones. Gah. Just amazing.

Date: 2012-01-07 03:15 am (UTC)I love the Narnia one, as Edmund is a favorite...and I like fics exploring his complexity. I think it's very important to remember that, in canon, the Narnian people gave the Pevensies their titles, not Aslan-so they mean more, because they came from proving themselves, and were an acknowledgement of heir natures. I think there's a lot worse than being known as "just", especially for a sovreign (and especially a sovreign who grew up with Issues). ~thoughtful face
