“You know, in another world, you might have been a hero.”

“Don’t speak of what-ifs, brother. It’s unbecoming.”

---

In the beginning, so the legend goes, God created the heavens and the earth, separated out the seas from the land and gave light unto the world.

In the beginning, so the Good Book tells, the Word was with God and the Word was God and the Word could do no wrong even before It had a body to do wrong with.

In the beginning, they say—whoever ‘they’ are—Evil and Good were set by His command, as unshakable as Death.

In the beginning—but the beginning was a long, long time ago.

---

It can be said that it began when God took nothing and made the stars. It can be said that it began when humanity went so many separate ways after Babel fell. It can be said that it began when America became the refuge for those who wanted freedom.

It can be said that it began when John Winchester asked Mary Leblanc for her hand in marriage. It can be said that it began when she cried and told him, “Yes.” It can be said that it began when Mary became pregnant, or when she gave birth to a son. It can be said that it began when she conceived again, another boy.

The true beginning, however, was when Dean laid eyes on his baby brother the very first time.

---

Heroes are not born, so the minstrels say. They are created by their circumstances, by their reactions to the events they cannot control.

Perseus was not born to kill Medusa; Hercules wasn’t born for the Twelve Labors. Odysseus only wanted to get home and Beowulf never meant to fight Grendel. Arthur only wanted peace and Lancelot never existed, anyway. Achilles was purely in thrall to bloodlust and Hector merely wanted his wife and child safe.

Heroes are not born, the way minstrels tell it. They evolve. Too bad no one ever bothered to tell Johnny-boy that.

---

Hazel eyes and the face of an angel. Small, delicate hands that grow calloused and strong. Blond hair that darkens into burnished gold.

What once was innocence wrapped in skin becomes a hardened warrior with no hope in his childlike face.

John thought his and Mary’s firstborn was a hero from conception because of how he stepped up after. He couldn’t possibly know that instead Dean was a chameleon who molded to fit his needs.

---

Jade green eyes and an attitude that called puppies to mind. Small frame that grew one summer and seemed to never stop. A skill with words that left strangers breathless and got him out of the same trouble it got him in.

He never hardened as much as Dean because Dean sheltered him from the worst of it. Dean took hits and claws and flights through the air meant for him. Dean told him stories and made him dinner and when he was younger kissed his cuts and bruises.

Jade green eyes didn’t age too quickly, like the hazel, because one took care of the other for as long as possible.

Sam kept his innocence long after Dean’s had crumbled to dust.

---

In the beginning Hope soared on wings of iridescent gold, flew into the gloriously clear sky and sang a song so beautiful even angels wept to hear it.

In the beginning Love spread her own gilded wings over the earth, humming a tune so perfect Hope turned back to join in.

In the beginning Fear and Hate shared a smirk and planned just how they would see the end of the world.

---

Heroes aren’t born. They are formed, molded by life and pain and despair. Heroes do not always survive the ending. Heroes sometimes fade away or fall or fail.

And sometimes, heroes even tarnish towards the finale, sad as the thought may be.

---

You know, in another world, you might have been a hero.”

“Don’t speak of what-ifs, brother. It’s unbecoming.”

Hazel darkened. Jade hardened. Heroes aren’t born. And heroes can fall.

Great ficlet. :) You did a very good job of showing a lot of emotions and insight in a concise, meaningful way.

Favorite lines:

John thought his and Mary’s firstborn was a hero from conception because of how he stepped up after. He couldn’t possibly know that instead Dean was a chameleon who molded to fit his needs.

Ooh, I really like that description of Dean being a chameleon who changed as John needed him to, because it really does make sense. For most of his life, Dean has adapted to John’s needs and expectations: protecting Sam, learning to fight evil, putting his own needs last.

He never hardened as much as Dean because Dean sheltered him from the worst of it. Dean took hits and claws and flights through the air meant for him. Dean told him stories and made him dinner and when he was younger kissed his cuts and bruises.

*nods* Yes, this is Dean, all right, doing whatever he can to protect his brother.

Sam kept his innocence long after Dean’s had crumbled to dust.

Lovely writing there. *hugs Dean*

In the beginning Fear and Hate shared a smirk and planned just how they would see the end of the world.

I love that. Love, love, love. So wonderfully written.

The true beginning, however, was when Dean laid eyes on his baby brother the very first time.

And the ending came when Sam sold the world to keep his brother alive.

That makes me want to gather both those boys up in my arms and hug them for hours on end.

Thanks for a great read.

Your epic, mythology-heavy entries make my heart flutter with all the possibilities of where Kripke and co. might take the series...

The repetition works in this, granting this piece a nice pace.
And Sam, Sam, Sam... you really should tell your brother how much you love him while you can, you know.

"Oh, boys" seems to be the only appropriate reaction to this.
