“Well, damn,” he says with a little laugh. “Sure is a big-ass hole in the ground.”

 --

There’re two months left and Sam’s working like crazy, digging himself deeper and deeper into despair.

There’s no way out and they both know it, but Sam’s got the Winchester stubbornness and he refuses to let go.

--

“Dean,” Sam calls softly and Dean turns back from the edge.

With a small, sad smile, Dean says, “I know.”

--

There’s one month left and Sam’s burnt out. With every breath, he apologizes to Dean, but Dean brushes them off.

“It’s what I do,” he says. “Who I am. And I can’t regret it.”

Sam nods, eyes tearing, and replies, voice tinged with self-loathing and pain, “I know.”

--

The sun sets across the Canyon and they wait in shattered silence.

--

There’s one week left and Dean says, “Let’s go to the Grand Canyon—never been there before.”

--

Sam’s hand is warm and strong on his shoulder. Dean can’t think of anything to say that hasn’t already been said. He waits for Sam to speak, and Sam clears his throat a couple of times, but no words come out.

And she comes.

*whimpers* But ... but ... you put a "Dean lives" tag on here.

Nicely done. I like how you told it through the two different timelines, and this greatly amused me:

“Well, damn,” he says with a little laugh. “Sure is a big-ass hole in the ground.”

LOL, because it reminds me of what I tell people when they ask me about the Grand Canyon -- It's a big hole in the ground. I was pretty underwhelmed by it, and have no desire to ever see it again. *g*

He doesn't die on-screen.

Still ... you killed him! *whimpers*

I did not see sunrise at the Canyon. I'm sure it's pretty, though.

'A big-ass hole in the ground' - kinda like my reaction to Stonehenge - the ancient monument everyone always raves about. Basically though, it's a load of big stones.

The rest of the fic - not thinking about it, no - not at all. *sticks fingers in ears* not listening, la la lala la.

Thanks! It's made by [livejournal.com profile] wicked_visions. It's one of my most favorite sayings because I find it so hard to tell people what I feel about things, so it kind of helps me feel tougher. :)

Waah! Stupid red-eyed bitch can stay the hell away from my boy! Of course they'd go to the Grand Canyon, although, I wonder if Dean would have Sam bring him at the end, cuz there's always the chance Sam will just drive the Impala off the rim, and we know Dean don't want that, right? Right? Oh God, I've just given you inspiration for more death!fic haven't I? *facepalm*

Wonderful as always, though painful, as you know.

i like how spare this is - the angst is very quiet. (i imagine that unless dean goes out guns blazing, it'll be like this. kind of calm and resigned.) and i giggled that "sure is a big-ass hole in the ground" is the reaction to the grand canyon. heh.

*facepalm* The first time I read that opening line, I read it as, "Sure is a big asshole in the ground" and I was trying to figure out if Sam and Dean had buried some jerk in the ground or what was going on! Oh man...*shakes head* How embarrassing...

Other than that, ack, painful, but lovely as always. I love the end when she comes for Dean. Excellent job. :)

*nods* You did!

*whimper*

I'm going to join the chorus "But it's got a 'Dean lives'-tag!"
...even if I do understand that the way you ended this is about the most perfect thing ever. As is the mood of this whole thing.
Quiet, aching, accepting.
Steadfast.

Oh, boys!

The alternation of times is nice, telling us just enough about what's happened before 'Now', clueing us in on the boys' mindsets. The way this is completely so delightfully in-character places this among the best 'codas' to the Second Season Finale that I've read so far, especially the ones set on that Best Before-date of Dean's...

You deserve each and every one! :)

Apologies for not answering your polls concerning PotC3. Haven't seen it yet, don't know when I'd have the time, either, so... Sorry.
