The bullet tore through his chest, invading his body and taking no prisoners. It exploded out his back, imbedding in the wall behind him, spraying the room with gore and showering it with blood.
He stared at them, shock and rage mingling in his eyes, then his body refused to listen to him anymore and gave up. He fell to the floor, trying to say something, anything—a sarcastic comment, a plea, a curse—but nothing came out except gasps.
The soldiers walked over, circling his prone form, aiming their weapons again.
It wasn’t supposed to end like this, he wanted to howl. It wasn’t. Not like this, not for me. I never wanted to leave! I never wanted the world—not like this. I can’t die, not here, not now! Please... it’s just a mistake.
He never wanted to be hero. He didn’t want to be a villain, either, but no one can help the hand they’re dealt. He never wanted freedom; how can you want something if you don’t know what it is?
But after Manticore burned down, after he didn’t have a choice, he grabbed onto to freedom and held on. Nothing would take it away from him. He embraced life, became a good man.
And good men always finish last. Isn’t that the saying?
He did his best, and tried his hardest, and here he is, dying alone with people like he once was.
It wasn’t supposed to end like this. Heroes are supposed to ride off into the sunset, secure in the knowledge of their victory, safe and happy and... warm. Not freezing on the floor with their blood pooling around them.
Or maybe, that is the way heroes die, and the stories are wrong. Because he is a hero, right? He is... he has to be. He can’t be having an identity crisis while his body shuts down and the soldiers bark back and forth about whose fault it is they’ve fucked-up and killed him.
For so long he was a soldier, X5-494. Then he became the psycho rogue’s twin. And then Alec, smartass and all-around nice guy when he wanted to be.
He wasn’t much of a hero. Now, as he dies, he realizes that it doesn’t matter. He could have been the worst hero in the history of the world, all selfish and half-assed, but at least he tried. At least he kept on trudging in the right direction, even when the whole world seemed against him. He never gave up, because even though it was cat DNA in his blood, he could be bullheaded to the end. He’d keep on trying just to spite the doubters, because... that’s the man he was. And it’s got to be sad when you refer to yourself in past tense.
With the last of his strength, he smirked up at his killers, darkly amused that his death would bring them pain. Even heroes can be vindictive as they die.

Date: 2006-11-19 08:55 am (UTC)Oh Alec, you beautiful, sarcastic, tragic boy-hero, you.
I loved that we got to hear his thoughts and his confusion and in the end his realization:
Even heroes can be vindictive as they die.
Simply, awesome.

Date: 2006-11-19 07:00 pm (UTC)It's okay..I'm used to the Winchester boys doing it on a regular basis. That you can have the loveable Alec doing it too, though? That = skills!

I liked your take on what might go through Alec’s head in his final moments. I especially liked this bit:
He never wanted to be hero. He didn’t want to be a villain, either, but no one can help the hand they’re dealt. He never wanted freedom; how can you want something if you don’t know what it is?
Great writing there. It nicely summarizes so much about Alec and the world he lived in.

Date: 2006-11-21 04:42 am (UTC)But there's only been two rules regarding this fic("Genetic Codes"): none of them(Sam, Jake, Dean) can die. And there has to be slash.
And I've already kept one of the rules. Yeah, that one's not going to be problem.
I. Will. Not. Kill. Them. Off.
As to this fic("Hero") there are parts I really like, but on the whole it's nowhere near the top of my faves of my own DA stories. But I am glad others are enjoying it!

It'll be a slash story? *pouts* But I don't read slash. *pouts some more*

Did not realize you'd written others. Jensen just sucks people into shows, doesn't he? *g*
