The legend grows with each telling, like all stories do. By the hundredth anniversary of their death, not much of the truth is remembered. Those who knew them personally are a dying breed, very few and quite far between.
            But the myth grows.

They were not princes or knights, though they were honorable men. They never killed unless necessary, and they never drew out the act. They never harmed children. They fought the darkness, no matter the personal cost, and they won—
Centuries pass and that is remembered. Though the price was high, they won.

Michael is the last who knew them, and he dies thanking them for his life.
Records are kept, by police and hunters and diaries handed from parent to child.
They are leaves on the wind, never in one place long, there and then gone, easy to forget but easier to remember, gifting strangers who never see them again with peace.

The legend grows with each telling, until the men they were are truly gone, save for their souls.
They fought the darkness, and though it cost them their lives—they won.

John Winchester has turned his older boy into the most perfect soldier. It shall have to thank the hunter for that. It wonders if John will be conscious enough to comprehend.

Sam is the only of Its children with true family; the rest are all changelings, left with humans after the babe died. But Sam really was conceived of humans, grew in a human womb, fed of his blood-mother’s milk.
And that makes him the strongest of all. That makes him Its favorite.

It is grateful—John has gifted It with Sam’s best bodyguard, the greatest hunter in the world.

She comes for him at midnight, a pack of shadow-dogs with her. She is in her own form: a female body of smoke and ash, fire leaping in her garnet eyes.
He hadn’t tried to run the first time he heard baying; he doesn’t try now.
“Are you happy, Dean Winchester?” she asks, her voice the wind in trees.
There is no point in lying. “Yes,” he replies, peace in his heart.
He is going to Hell, but Sam is alive.
She trails her hand—burningwarm—along his jaw. “Good,” she says. “It thrills me to know my clients are content.”
The dogs sit at her feet, waiting for her command. “They love the hunt,” she tells Dean. “You’ve denied my pets their fun.”
“Sorry,” he responds, staring past her, down the road.
Sam will wake soon. Dean only gave him enough to last for a few hours. He wants this to be done before Sam arrives.
“You’re a good boy, Dean,” she murmurs, leaning close, breathing against his face. “You haven’t tried to get out of the deal.” She kisses him and tastes like brimstone. “Content yourself with this, Dean,” she whispers into his mouth. “At least you’ll never be cold again. You’re my special pet—I’ll take care of you.”
He is going to Hell, and he is at peace with that—because Sammy is alive. Sammy’s more important than him, better than him, can do more good for the world than he ever could.
She twines her fingers through his. “Come home, Dean,” she says.
He doesn’t feel her take his soul or his body collapse. But he does see the gates open. He follows her in, the dogs streaming around them.
            He’s already forgotten Sam’s name.

Three beautiful snippets, but my gosh number 3 hurts. Dean gives up everything and totally loses any memory of why he is suffering. I love the idea portrayed in number 1. The way the myths about the boys grow is lovely.

I love all of these for different reasons.

The first is so hopeful and noble.

The second is sly and devilish.

And the third... so final and almost cruel, made me cry.

Beautifully done.

WOW!! That was just amazing and so sad that Dean would forget why he's down in hell suffering. Thanks so much for the awesome read!!

These 3 snippets left me breathless by the elegance of the writing, and the beauty and power of the content.

The first snippet reads a mythical tale of old, all poetry and song and rhythm. The second is chilling and twisted. And the third is bittersweet, achingly beautiful and hauntingly sorrowful and final.

Read together, the three snippets read like a legend, like a song of old which tells a story of love, death, sacrifice and courage.

Brilliantly done - these are definitely three of my all time favourite SPN stories in the fandom as a whole. Thank you so much for such amazing writing :).

This so just lovely. :) Great job showing how the boys became legends.

Favorite lines:

They are leaves on the wind, never in one place long, there and then gone, easy to forget but easier to remember, gifting strangers who never see them again with peace.

Beautiful line here.

They fought the darkness, and though it cost them their lives—they won.

Awesome ending.

to be thankful

Ooh, I really like this take on things, that the YED could be grateful for Dean being Sam’s protector. Makes sense, because without Dean, Sam might not have lived long enough for the YED to try to influence.

I’ll love you ‘til I die

He follows her in, the dogs streaming around them.

He’s already forgotten Sam’s name.

Oh, Dean. Oh, boys.

Even though Dean’s at peace when he goes, it still hurts.

Nicely done.

Damn it, girl.

Oh, you want some actual feedback?

"writ in water"
There was a Finnish poet by the name of Uuno Kailas, who wrote in one of his poems (very, very poorly translated) "The tune may change and the singers, too, but the song won't fade away. It remains."
("Sävel vaihtuu ja laulajat, mutta ei katoa laulu. Se jää.")
This reminded me of that.
If the boys will go, like they must, ultimately, this is the best possible end. They left, they disappeared, but the memory remains. And the fact that they did it.

"to be thankful"
*glee*
Tigris twisting the canon to suit her whims once more, I see. But you do it so delightfully... Not to mention the fact that the changeling-idea's certainly an insidious thought. :)

"I'll love you 'till I die"
And then you go and kill Dean again! And break us once more with that final sentence...
Damn it.

Three teensy fics, and yet...incredible. Each one is so gorgeous in its own way. In the first I love the very 'legendary' feel you give it - a timeless tale of our heroes that dies on the tongues of those they've saved as well as on ours, their fans. The second is just - uh - God - perfect. Dean and Sammy and John, and Lord save them all. Then, the third? Just: Deeeaaan! So, basically, loved these. Thanks for sharing.
