There’s a cuckoo in the nest, John. Of course, the question is—which one? Which of Mary’s boys isn’t yours?

It’d’ve been so easy to find out, Johnny. A little blood test, one of the many times you took them to the hospital over the years. But, John, you didn’t want to know.

And now… now, hunter, killer, it’s too late.

Too late for you, for them, for her—too late for the world.

There’s a cuckoo in the nest, John. One of her boys is wrong, dark… mine. They’re both murderers, you know. You made them that way. And entirely too wrapped up in each other, wouldn’t you say?

See, Johnny, the thing is… when it all comes down to it, no matter which is the cuckoo, they’re both mine. Those boys would follow each other into Hell… which they will.

Isn’t it interesting to wonder—Sam with his visions, Dean with his inability to stay dead… neither’s entirely normal, John. Is that because of Mary… or because of me? Or, Hell, even because of you, hunter. Wouldn’t that just be the most ironic thing?

Don’t look at me like that, Johnny. If you wanna blame anyone… blame Mary.

The only way I’ll let your brother out of his deal, Sammy, the demon purred with its host’s plump red lips, is if you kill someone for me.
            Who? he asked without hesitation.
            The demon smiled.

That yellow-eyed bastard who murdered Mom and Jessica and Dad is gone.
But, even still, neither of their souls are safe.

The first was an old woman in Boise, Idaho. Sam didn’t know why. The second was a young man three towns over.
Don’t ask, the demon whispered in his dreams. Trust me, sweetie—you don’t really wanna know.

After the fifth killing—two women, three men—the demon says, He’s yours again, Sammy.
            Sam nods.
I’ll need one more death to complete the deal, though, it adds.
            He doesn’t even feel surprised.

In Salvation there is a baby girl. She’s about three, now, a precocious child who almost seems telepathic.
When Sam picks her up while her parents sleep down the hall, Rosie doesn’t scream.

The final day of Dean’s year dawns with a thunderstorm.
The sun sets and the hounds never come.

Notes: part of my Dean canon

John wishes he could talk about Mary, could tell her boys about their mother. But the words hurt too much, get stuck in his throat, choke him. It’d peel back the scab to talk about her, so he doesn’t.
Dean has a few memories, John knows. Scant rememberings that can’t possibly do Mary justice. And Sammy has nothing of her at all but what Dean tells him.
John wishes he could describe her laugh, her smile, her scent—hell, even the way her anger burned bright for a few minutes then fading away.
Dean has her temper, unable to stay angry for long. Dean has so much of Mary it hurts, sometimes.
She loved horses, Mary. John was going to buy her one for their fifteenth anniversary, a Morgan mare. And she’d already talked about getting Dean a horse for his tenth birthday.
Horses shouldn’t be alone, Johnny, she’d told him. They don’t accept humans into their herd, not like dogs. So we can’t get just one.
John would have bought her the moon, if she’d wanted it. He wishes his boys could feel that complete surrender to another soul.
Of course, watching Dean with Sam… maybe Dean already does.

Dean has faith in what he sees, what he feels, and what Dad says. Sam has faith in Dean.
Dad says to hunt, so Dean does. He sees that they help people; helping people fills him with contentment. He’s happy hunting because they do good,
Sam hunts, at first, because Dean does.  He hero-worships his brother, wants to be just like Dean.
So the day he realizes that Dean’s only human, Sam’s faith is shaken. Dean’s faith stays strong until the day Dad vanishes with no warning.
But Sam’s faith in Dean’s restored, in the months following Jessica’s death. And Dean believes in what he sees, what he feels, and Sammy.

I love your drabbles. You pack so much into such short passages. But I'm darn curious about the first one:)

WOW - These are so fantastic - the idea of the Demon sending Sam to kill Rosie was so powerful - and the line , Don't Ask, Sweetie, You Don't Want to Know is such a perfect echo of Dean's 'Don't ask, Sammy you don't want to Know' from AHBL2 that it give it a lovely twist. Truly fantastic - mind if I friend for more ficcy goodness ?

I'm having a crappy day. Actually, not so much crappy as that it's just been one more day in a VERY long week. However, after reading this and indulging in some fabulous ice cream, I think I might just be able to face the world again. The raw sorrow in this has made me a little bit happier. Does that make me an evil person? I guess I don't really care because tommorow's FRIDAY, and that's about the only thing that I can focus on right now. Drabbles and ice cream...they make the world go 'round. Thanks for sharing!

Great drabbles. Love it that they both belong to the demon anyway, being so close. And the way Sam kill people to save Dean is really chilling.

I really like the creepy POV on this one. Nicely done.

dealbreaker

It’s chilling to see how far Sam goes to save Dean, and that ending, with Rosie, hurts. I can’t help but think how horrified Dean would be if he knew.

Oh, boys.

just not myself while you’re away

So, so lovely.

Conviction

Really nicely done, especially the opening and closing lines.

Oh, boys.

Love them all. I esp love the second one. The extent that Sam would go to to save his brother's soul ...

Cuckoo in the nest indeed... though by now, I'm pretty damn sure not even TPTB are sure about which one was the cuckoo...;)

The second...
Just the other day, I was wondering about what Kripke and co. will be allowed to do, considering Sam's "There's nothing I wouldn't do for you"-comment in AHBL2...
This is certainly a possibility.
Though thinking about Sam, what it would take for him to kill a small child... I'm sad to say that it's too easy to see him capable of that at least by the end of S3...
I hope the boys'll survive Dean's time-limit. Just not like this.

What Dean and Sam believe is certainly a delightful subject that should be metaed. The last snippet rings true: Dean and his belief in concrete things, Sam and his hero-worship of Dean...

Thank You for these.

*hugs*

Hi, I read a story a few weeks back in which John had taken the boys on a hunt. I think Sam was questioning the research or didn't like he was missing class either way he wasn't a happy camper (teenager... no surprise there). As the story goes... John pulls into a service station. While he & Dean go inside, Sam stays in the car. At some point a young drugged out man comes in to rob the place holding Dean & John hostage.

Sam comes in quietly & there is a standoff between the holdup man & Sam.... Does it ring a bell with anyone? Would like to read it again... but my laptop crashed recently taking with it my list of favorites...

so if anyone can help find this story would appreciate it...

btw.... reading through the above list of stories... I find the most haunting to be "Cuckoo in the Nest" & terrifying.. "Dealbreaker" (Makes me wonder what will Sam have been up to while Dean was away)... Roll on Season 4

(Has shivers, but it's good) Great stuff, great character insight. The last one is light, but all your fics manage to feel tragic even when not dark.

I thought you said you hated it when small children got hurt? Maybe Rosie killed Sam.

Or maybe Rosie and Sam ganged up on the Crossroads Demon and killed her. Would serve her right.
