She is almost plain, until she gets passionate. Then, she is beautiful. She’s an interesting person, someone you study for hours every day and still don’t understand. She bounces from one thing to the next, always complaining about it, but sticking it out.
When she laughs, a true, deep laugh, her whole body lights up. She’s beautiful then, too.
She’s compassionate. And funny, when she isn’t freaking and destroying private property, or selling out.
But, you realize, she doesn’t sell out. As she tearfully explains her position on the policy, you realize she never sells out. Not since the beginning. But she has her own code to follow, one you don’t really get. One you’ll probably never fully get, even if you stay around her for the rest of your life.
She runs out, face crumpling, and you want to follow, but Price is holding you. You don’t listen—you never listen to him—and finally he lets you go.
You have to reach her—apologize. You never apologize, but you want to make things right with her.
And there she is, slumped against the pillar, huddled in on herself, like you’ve never seen her before.
            And she is beautiful.

Sam waits a week to ask, letting Dean readjust. He watches carefully; Dean seems normal as he’s ever been. He doesn’t want to go out much and doesn’t want Sam too far away, so Sam’s finally comfortable asking.
            “What was it like?”
He waits till after Dean’s eaten, when Dean’s stretched out on his bed and nearly asleep. He expects Dean to brush him off, to make some lame joke.
“Dark,” he answers after a moment, voice soft and low. “Lonely. I was lost, trapped. But Kaitlyn… she’s somethin’, dude. She took care of me and I followed her out.” Dean raises his head, looks over. “I remembered who I was, what I was. But it would’a been so easy, Sam. So easy to just stay.”
That possibility frightens Sam. It was pure damned chance that led Sam to Dean. “Do you know how… why you changed?” Sam asks.
Dean flops back down. “Not a clue.” A pause, then “I’m beat, man. Wanna sleep.”
No more questions tonight. Sam just needs to research some more. He’ll find out what happened and he’ll make sure it never happens again.
For now, though, he still has more leads to follow about Dean’s deal.
He watches Dean for a moment, shakes off the remembered terror of knowing Dean was somewhere, needing him, being unable to get there. Dean’s safe. Unharmed. Back where Sam can look out for him.
            For now.
And Sam swears, with everything in him, no matter the cost, that it’ll stay that way.

Lovely coda to the story. I love this Sam who's so aware of Dean and good at taking care of him.

Now here is a Sam that's very easy to love. And the brotherly rapport... *smishes*
This made my heart ache, love.
Thank you.

I haven't watched Joan of Arcadia, but your drabble looks good. The Supernatural one is great, as usual.

On a completely unrelated note, it just occurred to me that on Dark Angel, Ben and Syl (Nicki Aycox/Meg Masters) were brother and sister.

Yes, Syl was in '...And Jesus Brought a Casserole', the season finale. She and Ben didn't appear together (well, not really; there was a brief glimpse of a flashback to Ben's death in the episode), but since both were siblings of Max, they were brother and sister. Which is ironic given that the actors later played Dean and Meg. I haven't been able to find any fanfic based on that fact, which is odd.

I've been watching the first season on DVD, one episode per day, and saw '...And Jesus Brought a Casserole' today. So tomorrow I'll be starting the second season with 'Designate This'. You should watch the first season. For the most part, I'll found it really good.

I mean "I've", not "I'll".

I've noticed. But the character of Max is likeable; at least, I've found her to be likeable in the first season. And the continuity is actually good.

Anyways, my main point was that it's odd I haven't been able to find fics linking siblings Ben and Syl to Dean and Meg.

I enjoyed your story. It is a very good description of Joan through Grace's eyes. I also enjoy your style of writing.

I love the JoA one! It has a nice rhythm to it that makes me ache for the show. Thanks for writing and sharing. :D
