Sam went to the zoo on a school fieldtrip when he was ten, and hasn’t been back since. He refused every fieldtrip after that, playing sick or just simply saying no. not like they could force them.

It wasn’t a big enough point for Dad to get angry about, plus it saved a little bit of cash. Dean didn’t understand at first, since he’d always loved getting out of class.
It wasn’t till Sam was seventeen that he finally explained, and Dean just nodded.
“I don’t like seeing the animals caged,” Sam said, watching a documentary about zoos on the Discovery Channel. It was horrific, the little cages of earlier times. “It’s like seeing them broken.” His hands clenched. “’specially the tigers.”
“Yeah,” Dean sighed. “Tigers are awesome, and certainly don’t belong behind bars.”

Date: 2007-12-23 04:59 am (UTC)A few years ago, I was on a trip with my dad and my youngest sister, and we went to this little middle of nowhere zoo-petting zoo-tourist trap type place. It had llamas and peacocks and deer and such, and a tiger, in a very bare cage maybe about 8x14 feet with a cement floor, just pacing back and forth. Saddest thing I ever saw face to face. So yeah, I can totally see this.
