Mary and John aren't mine

Mary was five months pregnant with her first child when she found the tiny kittens wandering her neighborhood. She was on her daily walk, trying to keep in some semblance of shape while she could still move(she remembered how big Momma used to get, in those final months of pregnancy). John was at work, though he’d be home soon.
There were two kittens, mewling, barely staying up on their itty little legs, and her heart just broke. She knelt, holding out her hands, clucking to get them to come close. Once they were in range, little mouths open in sounds to shatter a mother’s heart, she scooped them up. They were small enough to hold in one arm.
She cooed to them, hurrying home; now they were making distress cries, causing tears to pour down her cheeks. “Oh, babies,” she said, stroking along the smaller one’s head. “It’s alright now, I promise.”
Mary unlocked the house and hurried to the kitchen, crouching to let them down. They stumbled out of her grip, still crying. She quickly poured milk into a shallow plate and set it close to them. The larger scrabbled over first, ducking his entire face into the milk. The smaller padded over slower, tentatively, and Mary found herself laughing through her tears.
She was keeping these babies, no doubt about it. All she had to do was convince John.
