It’s a simple band, doesn’t look like much. But it represents everything he fights for; it’s his third-to-last link to Mary. Besides her boys, it’s all he has left except memories, and despite how hard he tries, those are all fading. He can’t remember her scent anymore, or the satin-soft touch of her hands on his skin, her voice. He can’t even recall her laugh except in dreams.
He misses her, more with every passing day. He wants to see her again, wants to hold her and kiss, wants to tell her about them men her boys have become. But all he has, since he refuses to visit her sons, just in case, is the ring she gave him the day she became his forever.

Reading the script, the scene doesn't come across as painful. JDM really manages to instill so much into John's character...
