Just to let you know, I have absolutely NO explanation for that! I don't get it at all. Who wants to be treated the way Jess treated Rory? (No offence to your little sister, but) Masochists? And who DOESN'T want to be treated the way Dean treated Rory? Again, masochists?
Dean did SO MUCH for Rory, and Jess did nothing! I just don't see the appeal of the character! It's really difficult to try and understand 'Literati' or Rory/Jess people because they can't usually give any real explanation. Or if they do, they explain why Jess would be good for THEM, not why he was good for Rory, which is not really up for argument because if someone likes being treated like dirt, then what can you say?
Also, I HATE that the Jess/Rory lovers took the nickname 'Literati' backhandedly implying that Dean was an idiot. Dean was not an idiot. He was interested in Rory because he noticed her reading and her concentration. He read Jane Austen for her and liked it. He wanted her to read Hunter Thompson. No, he didn't like Anna Karenina, but he read it and RE-read it for her because she loved it! After that, they sort of made it look like he didn't like books, but just because Rory could browse at a bookstore for 6 hours, and Dean was done in 45 minutes, doesn't mean he hates to read. Also, it takes a lot of intelligence to BUILD a CAR from scratch! This isn't LEGOs this is a CAR! And how smart is it to think you're so brilliant that you can completely blow off going to school but they'll still let you graduate, because you are just so much more intelligent than anyone else? In what way is that smarter than holding down a job, finishing school, applying and getting into college?
The truth is, Dean was a MAN and Jess was a selfish immature brat.
Dean took Lorelai head on at their first meeting saying, 'I need you not to hate me, because you are Rory's best friend and what you think means everything to her.'.
Jess was like, 'I don't care if you hate me. It's not my problem.'
Dean took Rory to a Chilton Dance, which he didn't want to go to. He rented a tux, learned to waltz, and wore white gloves to be her escort to her coming out, which he didn't want to do.
Jess wasn't even going to go to the stupid Stars Hollow Winter Carnival, even though Rory BEGGED him, because he didn't feel like it. He explained that even though he'd gone to the dance marathoin and the buy a basket thing, that was only because he was trying to get Rory, and now that he had her, he didn't need to do that stuff anymore. What the hell kind of a person wants a guy like that?
Dean built Rory a car. In fact, they broke up halfway through the building, and he apparently kept building it for her anyway, even though she wouldn't say she loved him. That is a TON of time and expense for someone who won't even say, I love you.
Jess wrecked that car, because he was being an ass, driving with no hands. Did not reimburse her for it. Then bought a car for HIMSELF!
Dean went to meet her grandparents, even though he'd already met her Grandmother and Emily hated him. Sat through Richard completely humiliating and insulting him, and was completely polite throughout. Richatrd again tried to humiliate him when he delievered the car to Rory, and Dean basically took it, and finally (sort of) won at least a sort of grudging respect from him.
Jess went to dinner at Rory's grandparents, (didn't even have to meet Richard), showed up with a black eye from a swan and refused to explain it. Was rude to Emily, upset Rory, and then left.
Dean left school every day, bought a coffee for Rory and met her at the bus stop with it. He went to every movie night with Rory and Lorelai. He asked Rory out every week.
Rory never knew where the hell Jess was or what he was doing.
Dean never pushed Rory to go any further sexually than she was willing.
Jess tried to do her in some stranger's bed at a party.
Jess is cool because he's a "bad boy"? He's a little more criminally inclined than just 'bad boy', I'd say, but even so, what is so cool about that?
Sorry about the venting, I know I'm just preaching to the choir! *LOL*
