Because Sam's earthly body has to die to release Lucifer's spirit.

Maybe, but I still really, really hope not. That removes the whole human with free will part of the equation and Sam can never be the hero if he loses his humanity.

Exactly. This is why I have trouble with this theory or the one where Sam is the key to bring Lucifer back. If any of these were true, why would Lilith not only want to but actually try to kill Sam?

This is something that is kinda worrying me. In his interview with TV Guide, Jensen Padalecki(sic) mentioned that Kripke was treating this season like last, because they don't know if they'll get a fifth season. :(

OMG I was just thinking that tonight! Like it came to me at the very end that it would be so very plausible. Like maybe Lilith didn't realize Sam was like Lucifer kind of reincarnated, but she's an old and powerful demon she should be able to take out almost any of them... but then when she saw Sam was immune to her white light power, she realized sha-bam! OMG he is Lucifer.... so now she is trying to break the seals in order for Lucifer to become his true self again or something like that! Eeee how crazy would that be!

I like it! I was thinking that Sam was actually the vessel for Lucy when he comes out to play... but your theory seems more plausible, especially since Lilith hasn't been trying to activly kill Sam as far as we've been able to tell. Maybe when she failed to kill Sam, she was like...

"But only Lucy the Dark One Killer of Butterflies can withstand me. The answer to this problem is either that Sam is Lucy or I forgot to charge my demon battery before killing the cat last night... - - Huh, must be the former!"

I've had the same thoughts for a while now:) It would be interesting.

Lilith not recognizing him as a human, she was pretty terrified when her white light o' doom didn't work.

And Dean, God's plan to try and get Lucifer to stop being a dick and realize humans can be something really good?

And Azazel might have been going through kids for centuries trying find Lucifer, hoping memories would come back after leading his armies again?

Lilith's against Sam right from the start. I'm thinking that she wants to be Lucifer's second-in-command, and Sam's her rival for that position. The YED was in one camp, the one that wants to put Sam as Lucifer's general, while Lilith's in the other camp.

Not sure yet where Dean's in all this. Maybe to reign in Sam perhaps, as perhaps they're seeing Sam as more controllable compared to Lilith, because of Dean. Maybe.
