Yes, Martin gets shot in the third season finale. The fourth seasonis almost all about Martin developping an addiction. And there are episodes that are quite good (despite the introduction of Elena and many things that were prettyimportant and about whichyou'll never heard talking again).

I've been happy with the way it was portraied (Martin's addiction) but in the end it was like... Okay I won't spoil you anymore :)
