Mary was never given the opportunity to raise the kids, though, unlike John, whose main approach to Childrearing For The Hunter 101 seems to have been a combination of baby boot camp and turning the older preschooler gradually into a combination nanny (remember that wonderful Secret of yours a while back?), substitute mom and (non-sexual unless Kripke is planning the bombshell of ALL bombshells to dwarf the Apocalypse, though I swear a LOT of Dean's weirdness would fit the syndrome) emotionally-stepped-on substitute wife so he could continue The Crusade.
She never got the chance to love them both as they grew and see that the older one had his own significance and excellence.
Both boys were amazing, worthy of a mother's unconditional love rather than just a ghost ignoring the older one to give the younger a loving apology years later.
From her truncated experience, it WAS the little one who was more important, as the Deal centered around evil in the nursery and whatever happened to him was her indirect doing. She had no way of knowing the emotional wreck her big boy grew up to become even before HIS Deal.
