Five years after you leave Smallville, you see him for the first time. Well, in person—you’ve seen him on TV, the ever-suave business man. Quite the persona; you know he’s fooled everyone with his little act.
She’s by his side, of course. You’re not surprised.
-
You left the country the day after you got the hell out of Dodge. You went to Britain—Mom has family there.
You finished school and Dad brought you back into the fold.
No one asked about Mom. The US, for some reason, thought you were dead.
Dad set them straight. You didn’t wonder about how she felt. Really.
-
You could blame your actions in Smallville on Mom. If you wanted. You prefer not to think about them at all. Life’s simpler that way.
Dad understands your aversion to LutherCorp and always sends someone else to those meetings.
-
You managed to avoid them for half a decade.
She freezes when she sees you and clutches his arm. He looks over and his eyes widen then narrow.
You smile.
-
You weren’t always a bastard. Honest. But the business world is cutthroat and you’re a bit—just a bit—bitter about what happened.
You keep your words polite and your tone cordial. You keep your face pleasant and your bearing interested.
You know they both know you’re pissed, but it doesn’t matter. You win the dance and leave with a smile.
-
You know she’ll have bad dreams for a while. You know he’ll wonder if he chose the wrong one.
You know you won. For some reason, that doesn’t make anything easier.
You don’t dwell on that for long. After all, you got out. The world is at your fingertips. You have take-overs to plan and meetings to attend, and what you left in Smallville should be far from your mind.
