Why are there so many character X/original character fics in the world? I don't care about them interacting with Mary Sue! If they have to be with someone, how about someone they actually know in canon?
And where are all the Wolverine/Sabertooth fics? The movie's been out an entire weekend!

Date: 2009-05-05 02:07 pm (UTC)I'll say, too, that unless a writer gets the chance to experiment with OCs, and learn what's good or bad about them, they'll never be able to expand and improve their craft.
Hopping down off my "Give OCs a Chance!" pedestal now...

Date: 2009-05-05 02:10 pm (UTC)I do like OCs. I have created some. But when their sole purpose is just to be better or live out the author's fantasies--that's when it gets annoying. And there are so many like that.

Date: 2009-05-05 02:25 pm (UTC)As far as characters existing just to be OMG SHINY!!!!... My head will never stop aching from the sheer torment that is Lana Lang.
Back to edit to ask: do you find there are authors who can handle canon characters really well, and it's just their OCs who suck? I'm trying to think of an instance of a good, strong, imaginative writer who just faceplants with OCs.

Date: 2009-05-05 04:55 pm (UTC)I know! I read the premise and it looks so good, then I get started on the fic and want to cry. I am very picky, I admit that, but grammar is IMPORTANT.
I remember not minding season 1 Lana, but then I stopped watching until season 4, which I got for graduation. She was so frickin' annoying, and poor Jason was in love with her(or, it was plot instigated by his mother, whichever).
I think there are some authors that can do OCs well, like

Date: 2009-05-05 05:54 pm (UTC)Season 4 - I remember there being a scene where Jason's mom walks into the Talon and is literally halted in her tracks by how stunningly gorgeous Lana is. And TELLS HER. For some reason, the writers felt a need to tell the audience at least once an episode how OMG SHINY Lana is. Maybe it's because none of us actually thinks so.
Yep, the sentence makes sense. Seems that if someone's bad with characterization, it doesn't matter whether the character is their own or someone else's.

Date: 2009-05-05 03:20 pm (UTC)I've yet to find an OC I've liked, at least not when they've been paired with the character that's the focus of the fic. I think that's maybe why I have such a hard time finding het that I like too >.<

Date: 2009-05-05 07:50 pm (UTC)Ha! I'm pretty sure Sabertooth would rip another person apart before getting close enough to have sex with them, let alone have an any kind of romance. If someone could pull that off, without making me want to put my eyes out, I think they'd deserve some kind of award.

So you'll stop writing crossovers then? Pity.
My whole flist wishes to know where the W/S is.

Date: 2009-05-06 01:37 am (UTC)I know that. I was just annoyed by the Pit's selection of X-Men fic. There are some very well rounded, real OCs out there, I just couldn't find any when I was looking.
And I totally spaced out on realizing that Dean could never interact with Alec if it weren't crossovers. *facepalm*
Have you seen Wolverine?

Give the fic time~. It'll come. Y'could always look way into Marvel fandom, but going there is not... pretty.

Date: 2009-05-06 09:03 am (UTC)Bones jar against bones, blood wild in their veins, aphrodisiac on their tongues as they claw their way towards release, the tang as sharp as their secrets.
They fit together, slip, slide, teeth, claws; bones break, skin's shredded, the pain perfects the pleasure with each new burst of adrenaline and endorphins.
It's wrong to want this, take this, give this and he fights it, all of it, him(self), time and again because he should. Every time, it seems, he loses faster.
It goes past his brains, taps into his instincts, brings out the rabidity; they clash and burn, struggle for submission, teeth over jugular until growls become whines.
They mark each other, scar their souls because no brand, no slash ever remains beyond a breath on their mut(il)ated bodies.
