Bone snapping has never been louder and the vampire laughs, dropping Sam like a broken toy. His body slips to the ground, just lays there, still and silent, and a howl fills the night air around them, causing all the vampires to freeze, causing John to look over, and Dean can’t shut up.
He falls to the ground beside Sam, machete limp in his hand, and slowly the vampire backs away, wondering just what the fuck’s happened.
Dean’s hand lightly traces Sam’s jaw and the machete glimmers in moonlight. John moans and the vampires all back away, trying to escape notice, because something is building on the night air, something is singing, and they all hear it.
“Sammy,” Dean whispers. “I’m sorry.” Tears pour down his face as he pulls Sam to him, but none of the vampires notice as they haul ass out of Dodge, and John’s crying his own tears.
Is this what Dad felt? Dean wonders. Is this what it feels like, having your heart ripped out?
He raises his head to watch Luther leave, and something dark settles on the bit of his heart left.
----
“You have your quest,” Dean says, looking out the window. “I have mine.”
John nods, knowing he can’t change Dean’s mind. He’s got the gun, and he’s got plans, and the knowledge dangles just of reach, but he’ll find it. He searches for anything to tell his son before walking out the door again—the final time, they’re both sure—but nothing comes to mind. So he just smiles sadly and steps away, knowing he’ll probably never lay eyes on his son again.
Dean doesn’t watch his father go. He just finishes sharpening the knives, counts his rounds, and checks the guns, making sure they’re all ready.
Then he slips on his coat, grabs his bags, and heads out, all without a sound. He drives away into the night, heading south—reports came from one of Dad’s old friends.
The vampires who killed Elkins and Sammy are hightailing it out of the country, trying to outrun the wrath of something they can’t fathom.
Dean actually smiles, picturing their faces as he meets them there.
----
Certain things are inevitable.
Once vampires have a scent, they’ll follow it until they reach its end. Vampires mate for life. Sunlight doesn’t kill them, just feels uncomfortable. The only way to kill one for sure is to cut of its’ head.
Dean sharpens the sword by moonlight and waits. They have his scent. He has their trail.
He also has the fledge.
----
John finishes his mission and dies, going home to Mary and Sam. Dean doesn’t cry, hearing the news—at least Dad is beyond pain, finally, back with Mom.
----
Luther silently pads up, crouches by Dean, who keeps looking out over the water of the Pacific.
“Can vampires cross running water?” Dean asks and Luther nods.
“Where is Maria?” Luther asks back and flinches away when Dean rises to his feet in a movement more fluid than Luther could have managed. The sword hangs beside him, glinting in the pale glow of the moon, and Dean starts talking.
“You know, Sammy had plans. We were gonna kill the thing that killed Mom and he was gonna go back to college, get a degree, have a life.” He laughs, shaking his head. “He actually thought he could leave hunting, just forget about it, ignore the news stories that couldn’t be anything else.” He brings up the blade, lightly runs his finger along the edge, and smirks when his skin opens beneath it. “He was wrong. He wouldn’t have been able to leave. But you stole the choice from him.”
“You came after us,” Luther hisses, the rest of the clan slipping into sight. “We would have let you be, but you came after us.”
The cloying scent of blood wafts through the night air and Dean smiles, raising his finger to his lips, and sucking at the wound. “Doesn’t matter,” Dean says, looking at each of them. Twelve to one—not fair, really.
Luther glances around, almost fearfully, as something begins to sing. “What is that?” he hears Victor mutter, and they all jerk back as Dean laughs.
“It had to get one of us,” he says to the night, spreading his arms wide, letting the moonlight settle around him. “One of us—and you took Sammy away.” He spins around and darkness settles on him like a cloak.
Luther steps back, slips to the edge of the group, and they all try to melt into the night, try to fade. “Dad got him, the bastard that killed Mom—but it was just the beginning,” Dean continues and the sword floats from his hand, flings toward Luther, and pauses, blade against his neck.
“Certain things are inevitable, vampire,” Dean snarls, striding through the clan, each cowering as he passes. “One of us had to fall.” He grabs the hilt and swings.
----
Dean’s just glad it was him, because Sammy’s soul was too good to stand the guilt.

Date: 2006-05-27 10:46 pm (UTC)You're Wild Wolf Free17 on fanfiction.net aren't you?!!
Just to say, huge fan of your writing, and yes - my screename here is the same as on fanfiction.net - i've reviewed a few times and was hoping you would find your way onto Livejournal!
I really hope you don't mind but i just friended you!
Just dropping off a comment, and keep up the good work!
You are always consistantly good, and have made me weep a couple of times, (especially your 'There was a Story, Once' one-shot.
Take care!

Date: 2006-05-28 12:00 am (UTC)Did you read the little i've written of a SPN fanfic? It's only the first chapter but there's more in the pipeline, for after my exams :0
Something tells me you're a DeanGirl. I am observant. Yes, yes i am.
*waves* SamGirl here :) It's the hair that does it. And the brooding.

Date: 2006-05-28 01:11 am (UTC)Hehe, I'm a hardcore SamGirl but i'm currently temporarily in the DeanCamp...just while Sam's Magic Shrinking Eye goes away again. It shouldn't be funny but it sooo was!
Am currently re-watching the series and have a new-found appreciation for Dean, largely because he just totally BROKE me in the finale. Have you seen the E!Online interview with beardified Jensen and *probable* hungover Jared? So cute!
And yay for review! Yeah, it's probably going to end up being a faint crossover with an original piece of writing that *ONE* day i hope to a) complete and b) have published.
Have you written any original stuff? You are one of the most prolific fanfic writers i have seen! Have you/do you want to get anything published one day?

Date: 2006-05-28 01:18 am (UTC)I've started countless stories. Alas, it's harder making your own characters, isn't it?
I have a fictionpress account, under wildwolffree17, with many poems and short -short- stories.
I hope to publish poetry, but my uncle has told me there's no money in that; I've written a completed screenplay that completely sucks so I've yet to look at it again.
And, yes, I've one poem published.

If that doesn't satisfy you...there's another way...
Pish, we don't write for the money ;) Which you already know, else you wouldn't be a fanfic writer!
Yeah, i know what you mean about original characters. Which of course means you include quite a bit of yourself in your main characters, so you have to be pretty clever about ensuring they dont become Mary Sues...but in your own work...which would just be self-insertation, wouldnt it? Like a Mary Sue without a fandom. A fandomless Mary Sue. Let's throw coins!
Sorry, not sure where my head went for a moment there.....
It would be worthwhile checking out what sort of money IS in poetry.
Hopefully studying English Literature and Philosophy at university come September, so if i forget til then, at least i'll be reminded and find out ;)
I have about 200 pages of my mainnovel, and then the main plot outlines to about 6 more....
Wow i talk a lot.
