Eliot knows how to use a gun. He knows how to take them apart, clean them, put them back together. He knows how to aim, how to compensate for the recoil, how to change the trajectory as he pulls the trigger.

A gun is the first weapon he ever learned, before sticks or knives or even fists. And as good as he is with the rest… he’s best with a gun.

Eliot doesn’t like to take lives. He worries that he’ll become too much like the man who taught him if he ever gets a taste for blood. Guns are impersonal. Easy. He hates them because they were his father’s favorite weapon.

He got them out, him and Emily. Every Christmas, she sends a letter to the one PO Box she knows about. She writes to her brother, to a boy who died when he shot his father. But she doesn’t know that.

Eliot knows how to kill with a bullet. He knows it very well and it is just too easy. Dad made sure he knew every kind; Dad liked guns because they kept his hands clean of blood.

Every drop of blood that didn’t touch his skin stained his soul. Eliot looks his marks in the eye.

Eliot knows himself. He hasn’t shot anyone in almost twenty years but he can still remember how it felt, to take a life so cleanly.

He shoots to kill. It’s why he’ll never use a gun again.

When he sleeps, he dreams in shades of gray. The sky rains fire and blood, and people beg for mercy. Sometimes their heads are cut in half. Sometimes they’re ripped apart. They look like his family, like Ma and Pete and Claire. Sometimes, in his waking hours, he can’t remember his ex-wife’s name, or their sons.

Sometimes, in the dreams, Ma and Pete and Claire call him monster. Sometimes they threaten to kill him.

Sometimes, he smiles while they cry. He doesn’t understand—before Sylar’s death, it wasn’t like this.

You know how things work, a dark voice purrs in the back of his mind. So what does that mean?

He wants to talk to Mohinder or Peter, but neither will pick up the phone. He wants to ask Ma to fix things, but all she ever does is lie.

No one to trust, the dark voice says. Nowhere to turn. What will you do?

He never looks in the mirror when he dreams. He avoids it whenever possible while awake. In the morning, he doesn’t feel rested. At night, he’s exhausted. He’s always hungry, but no matter how much he eats, he’s never sated.

He hasn’t flown since Sylar followed him out the window.

Ma tells him to sleep more. To quit working so hard. To not worry—she has everything in hand.

When he dreams, she calls him Gabriel and unleashes him on a world completely unprepared.

He leaves a dozen messages on Mohinder’s voicemail before the number is disconnected.

In his dreams, Mohinder says This is vengeance. And it’s going to hurt.

The dark voice murmurs, Ah, Mohinder. So righteous. How the mighty fall.

He calls Peter, but Peter never answers or calls back. Bennet avoids him. Parkman fled across the country and wants nothing to do with the Company.

Ma calls him darling boy and it feels like a lie.

You know, the dark voice says while a man begs for his life in a gray- and red-hued dream. You know. Tell me your name.

He looks into a mirror, waking as Mohinder’s memory gasps, “Sylar.”

Nice take on why Eliot hates guns. Nicely woven back story into the narrative.

Every drop of blood that didn’t touch his skin stained his soul. Eliot looks his marks in the eye.

I especially enjoyed that second sentence there.

*bounces* Sylaaaar! Yes! This needs to happen, the sooner the better! *glee* Best thing about season 4 so far.

I'm curious, what's your take on the Sylar in Parkman's head? Is he actually a part of Sylar, like a ghost, or some kind of psychic echo (which baby touch and go is causing to take root and re-build and there'll be a battle of wills and Sylar will end up taking over Matt and shapeshifting back to himself), or is he just the personification of Matt's guilt (that will make him go nuts and think Sylar has taken him over and how frigging cracktastic would an evil Matt Parkman who thinks he's Sylar be?) ? And what about that hint of a step towards a 'new protege' kind of thing they had there, with Matt giving in and using the power on the water-boy and Sylar smirking. Hm??? *bounces*

In all honesty, most of the rest of the show could go hang. I'm mainly watching for the Sylar. :-D

But will Matt's guilt be strong enough that Sylar will subsume Matt's personality?

Greg Grunberg being Sylar could be either the most awesome or the most cracktastic thing ever. Or both. XD

Can I join in??

If you want a hint as to where Sylar's storyline is going, check out the extended season 4 trailer. There is a scene.. where Sylar emerges. I won't say more in case you dont really want to know.

(watches for Sylar too)loved season 3 for that reason..more Sylar!!

Holy shit! This gave me actually shudder in my seat chills. It's powerful, sad, chilling and it rings true.

I've always thought that Eliot was beyond proficient with a gun just by how quickly he can disarm them without looking. As much as he hates guns, he's on autopilot with them.

In the Miracle Job, when he grabs the gun, takes the safety off and cocks it in one smooth move without looking at it is really the first time that we see him do anything with a gun other than disassemble it. I can easily imagine Eliot having a snipers skill with a gun and not liking them because he's killed so many 'faceless' people with them. He wants to give his opponent a fighting chance. I also think the physicality of fighting, helps him to keep his capacity for violence under control in the way the impersonalness of a gun can't.

I want to hug Eliot now. Just a big, smushing hug... Because that wass amazing. What you wrote was amazing.

And the title!! Deadwood Mountain is one of my favorite Big and Rich songs, so your choice of title is,in my opinion, just another level of awesome to this short piece.
