Staring into the maw of the devil’s own monster, Jack remembers words whispered to him in Tortuga, back when he was a boy trying to survive.

There is no room for a happy ending, his customer told him, tracing his jaw. Not for such as us.

I’m not like you, Jack’d protested weakly while the man maneuvered him around.

Aye, but you are, he said. I once was you, long ago.

Jack refused to believe him. For years he operated on one principle: please himself first. Attain a happy ending. Reach his dreams and clutch them close.

Staring into the Kraken, Will and his bonny lass escaping, Jack knows that bastard was right.
