"That was a pretty speech," she says, holding out a mug of cocoa.  "Boy, I sure am impressed."

"Shut up," he mutters, taking the mug and wrapping his hands around it.

"No, really," she adds, looking out into the garden, scratching the calico queen sunning on the windowsill.  "You told that boy what-for.  He'll fall in line, dance to your tune—I swear, none of you feather-brained fools ever learn."

“Dean’s a soldier,” he tells her, following her gaze. “He’ll see. He has to—Father said—”

“Oh, sweetheart,” she murmurs, turning to look him straight in the eyes. “If you’re still trusting that your father has everything in hand…” She sighs. “You can’t force him, and if you could it wouldn’t be the same. Destiny, Fate, Meant to Be… they’re not real.” She smiles at him, reaching out to pat his cheek. “Dean Winchester follows no one’s rules but his own, and his brother follows him. You need to learn how to deal with him on his terms, nobody else’s.”

For a creature older than time, Michael looks remarkably flabbergasted. “But Dean is my vessel,” he says. “He—”

“Is a man,” she interrupts. “A son, a brother. Above all else, that boy is a big brother.” She pats his cheek again, harder. “And you told him, flat-out and unapologetic, that you’re going to kill his little brother. You just set yourself back an epoch and a half, kiddo.”

 He sighs now, sagging down. “I thought… I don’t…”

She chuckles, glancing back out the window. “Those Winchester boys tend have that affect on people. You’ll get used to it—your own little brother sure did.”  She lets a moment pass in silence before adding, “Now, drink your cocoa. Take a deep breath, preen your feathers, or whatever it is you birds do.”

He rolls his eyes, but sips the scalding liquid and inhales as deeply as he can; he isn’t even surprised when he does feel better.  “Now what?” he asks, taking another sip.

“We wait,” she answers, as the calico stretches and jumps to the floor. “Those boys’ll come knockin’ soon enough.”

Missouri turns from the window, gives him another smile, and bustles away.

After a few minutes, Michael follows.
