She names him Michael Robert, but she and Jeep call him Robbie. They never stay in one place long, and they both learn how to aim and handle the recoil and kill without hesitating. They can’t afford rookie mistakes, not in this new world.
Michael shows up every once in a while, saves all three of them, shares some oblique and sage advice, and leaves. His eyes linger on Jeep and he doesn’t touch Robbie and he tells Charlie that she must be strong.
“So, what?” she asks him one night, curled up next to Jeep, Robbie wrapped in her arms. Michael is a sentential, stoic and silent, the only thing Jeep trusts to watch Charlie and Robbie, the only thing he’d sleep near. “I’m Sarah and my son’s John Connor?”
“No,” he says quietly, eyes on the horizon, wings at rest. “You are Charlie and he is the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel.”
She scoffs, laughing with a bitter and mad edge. “Why me, Michael? I’m… nothing.”
He turns to face her, eyes frightening in their intensity, lit up by moon- and starlight. “You are not nothing, Charlene. You will learn and grow and temper the strength I and God see in you. You will teach your son everything, keep him safe, lead him into the light so that he may lead the world.”
“And Jeep?” she asks, meeting his gaze.
Michael looks away. “Jeep will help you,” he says.
Charlie nods, knowing that he means she will succeed because of Jeep at her back, at her side.
