Only seven people living know that the man called Methos was once Death on a horse. Four of the seven were The Horsemen. One is the only surviving slave. The other two were once students of War and Pestilence.

The students, Methos knows, will not speak of those days.   He has found them again, seen how they moved past the Horsemen—unlike Kronos and Silas and Caspian, who still revel in the blood. The students can be allowed to live. The Horsemen will be dealt with. But the slave…

She hunts Kronos, and Kronos hunts Methos. She will bring everything out into the open, three thousand years later when none of it matters anymore.

Nine people know for fact that Methos exists. Seven know he was once Death.

He leaves messages for MacLeod and Joe. Vanishes in the night, goes to where he knows Cassandra will be in two days’ time. He thought he loved her, once, three millennia ago. It’s why Kronos took her, and why Kronos let her escape.

If she had not resumed the hunt for Kronos, if Methos wasn’t sure she’d turn the fury onto him… he let her live once. He and Kronos both did.

But now she is a threat, and Methos knows how to deal with threats. He can run and hide, or—

He finds her mid-morning, in one of the city’s gardens, on holy ground. He shoots her and takes her head. The quickening knocks down a tree. After he is recovered, minutes before the authorities will arrive, he carries her body to a car he stole just for this. He puts her and the head in the trunk, next to her Watcher. Both will vanish without a trace.

Methos returns to his life as the infant Adam Pierson. Kronos finds him and Adam Pierson asks MacLeod for help because he never could kill his brothers.

Soon enough, only five people know Methos was Death. One will die fairly quickly; he’s only mortal. One will live forever, no matter the cost, even if it’s the other three’s lives.

Methos has already lived long enough to remember life before language. He survives, whatever the price.

His brothers’ students know that, and so will never challenge him. MacLeod…

One day, Death will reap him, unless someone else beats him to it. Death loves no one, and likes even less. And to Death, all immortals are threats.

And Death knows how to handle threats.

Dean spent a month away from Stars Hollow after breaking up with Rory for the third—and final—time.   He still loved her—had always loved her. But he was done. Couldn’t take it anymore.

He’d stood in the sun and gotten burned. She was too brilliant, too beautiful for him. He’d known it for years. Known it and tried to deny it, but now… now he took a mental health month and returned determined to do his job and ignore the Gilmores.

Eventually people stopped looking at him. Luke stopped glaring at him. Dean and Rory quit being news.

A year later, Dean moved on from Stars Hollow. His parents wished him well and Clara cried, but Dean had been accepted into a pretty nice school and he wanted more than a small town had to give.

He wasn’t as smart as Rory, he’d always known that. But he had potential of his own and he wanted to find his limits, so he could surpass them. Just to see.

Dean wanted a sun of his own, even if it burned.

Alec knows that he's attractive. All X5s are; it was mixed in with cat and a dozen other things.

He was trained to use it, too. Maxie escaped before those lessons, so she really is without a clue. Instinct helped her, using her natural beauty to her advantage—life is a cruel teacher. Almost as cruel as Manticore.

But inside Terminal City? Dozens of animals caged together?   You need more than instinct. More than can be taught on the streets. Max has personal charm, but she’s no leader. She lacks foresight. And Alec… well, he’s stealing Terminal City out from under her and she hasn’t caught on yet. He learned everything Manticore taught, and he learned it well.

Maxie is strong, and she is brave, and she’ll watch wide-eyed as he challenges her and drops all masks.

Alec is too pretty to be dangerous. Like a cat. And he grins at Maxie, showing all his teeth. He’s been studying her.

He’ll win.

Thank you so much for wroting my GG Sunburn prompt, and for such a unique take on it! I always love happily (as can be) ever after Dean! Great little story!

I Love the Dark Angel Story as well, so spot on with the charaterizations of Alec and Max!

I don't know Highlander (I know, WHAT???) but it was still an interesting and well-written piece!

I really like your Methos. You always have such an interesting take on him and this is no exception. For someone who values his head and his secrets, it makes perfect sense to hunt down and kill the Immortal who can ruin the life he's carved out for him. And I like that Death takes no prisoners, even if he is quiescent at the moment. Nice.

You don't write DA like that and make it that short. It's a crime against nature. *cracks whip* Twenty pages minimum missie!! Bip bip!!

Oh my goodness. This was powerful to say the least. Even if it's short, you still drive the point home. Definitely painted a realistic, predator version of Alec. I think this is the first fic that looked at things from that perspective. Very good.

I'm here via [livejournal.com profile] hl_flash. Thank you for sharing your "fear of the horseman." This cold scenario is as likely as the one we got, moving from its origin point in a spare way that clips short any possibility that Methos might change/have changed on that most important to him. Frigidly convincing, it made me root all the more for Duncan in the eventual, possible, final confrontation. If Methos chooses to make it Death versus Life...

(I prefer to think that immortals actually can't behead each other on holy ground... but I'm curmudgeonly and would put canon back where it was at the end of second season, if I were in charge of such things. ~g~)

Again, thanks!
