Inception/Harry Potter idea query
Jan. 25th, 2012 11:28 pmSo, today I started writing the fic where Arthur&Eames rescue and adopt Harry Potter. I have a list of things that change/don't change from version to version, and I've made a list of Harry's yearmates in canon (according to the HP wiki). The thing is, should I even out the number students? None of the houses has the same amount, and there are three more boys than girls overall. So should I toss in a few OCs, just because?
Also, the part I wrote today is McGonagall's, but who should be the narrator for Eddie's sorting? I can't decide.

Date: 2012-01-27 01:23 am (UTC)I don't have any OCs in mind.
Ooh, what about Draco? Or Hermione?

Date: 2012-01-27 03:45 pm (UTC)She's a Slytherin. And now I am leaning towards her pov. But I think I want it to be an adult's pov - except, if she's a half- or pureblood, she'd know about Harry Potter, wouldn't she? So she'd know he didn't show up.
Hmm.
So conflicting!

Date: 2012-01-27 04:00 pm (UTC)So, I went back to the HP wiki. In the books, there's a Morag McDougal. In the movies, there's an Isobel McDougal.
I think I'll make them twins, one in Ravenclaw and one in Slytherin.
And maybe an adult can narrate the sorting, and Morag/Isobel the first half of the night, the second half being Draco?

Date: 2012-01-27 04:03 pm (UTC)And the division makes sense too. Make it a teacher until they're out of the hall, a classmate until they go to bed and a roommate for the rest of the night. Sounds perfectly logical. And the PoVs are bound to be fascinating just because of who you picked...

Date: 2012-01-31 05:31 pm (UTC)So, Eddie decided to pop into the compartment the sisters had on the train. And now Isobel&Morag have a magical cat, and Eddie has a magical snake Eames found somewhere. *headdesk*
Isobel's pov until the Sorting, and then Snape, I hope. But when should I reveal Eddie is Harry? And how? And we won't meet his parents until its his pov, but I don't want to write his pov. Not until he remembers the days before Arthur&Eames, anyway, and if I wait that long, it'll be a goddamned epic.

Date: 2012-01-31 05:50 pm (UTC)How's this: It's been done before, but magic, Naming, it's kind of a convenient thing. Either the Hat or the list the teachers have could be spelled to reveal true names. That way, Eddie would be outed in front of the whole school, though, which would be way too much trouble for me personally to write. Alternately, someone (Snape, most likely) could make the connection about a missing Potter and a present kid no-one's ever heard of before. It's not rocket science. And if that is too trite, there's always Dumbles' all-knowing-ness, given to him by the magical powers of his beard, which is magical. Kind of like Sampson, only with facial hair.
Moving on.
As for Eddie's PoV, you don't want to write it? Don't. The parents can tell the backstory and a teacher (again, Snape would be convenient and is the only canon character to have ever proven to have any sort of observational skills)can be present for an interaction between the family at school.
If that leaves gaps, overheard conversations are a neat trick, as are eleven-year-olds who talk a bit too much out of school.
And if all else fails, you just gave the kid a magical snake. It's always around Eddie. It can talk. Duh!

Date: 2012-02-01 03:29 pm (UTC)Dumbledore knows Harry is alive; he just can't find him. And with all the new muggleborns showing up, I figure it's not unreasonable for no one to make the connection; Harry no longer looks like a scrawny mini-James Potter, anyway. Eames is a wizard and adopted Eddie magically, binding him to them. It'll come up at some point; he's got hazel eyes (what color are Tom Hardy's eyes? I wanna say hazel or blue/green, but the pictures aren't really helping) and brown/black hair. And the scar is gone, because of the adoption.
Eddie's already told Isobel&Morag a little about his parents, so if they're the new trio, maybe tidbits can slip that way? And pretty soon, Eddie'll be telling Slytherin about how awesome his da and dad are.
I don't think being a parselmouth would reveal Eddie as Harry. He's not known as Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived, so there's no (known) connection to Voldemort - he's a complete unknown, a halfblood whose dad never went to Hogwarts (I think Eames' parents were either criminals who straddled the fence between worlds or fled the magical UK during Voldie's reign. So he was raised a wizard with muggle tendencies, joined the military, became a world-renowned dream-thief, married Arthur, and adopted Harry). Maybe there're parselmouths in Eames' bloodline (or so Eddie could tell people. not like he knows any better. He has no idea he was ever Harry Potter.) *shrugs*

Date: 2012-02-01 03:34 pm (UTC)Muggleborns... I forgot about those. They'd make the name thing a bit hard to do. Can the Hat see people's complete memories? That could be your connection, then.
TH's eyes are... greyish blue? I'd go with blue.
I love the 'new trio' idea. You could do amazing things with that combination of characters.

Date: 2012-02-01 03:49 pm (UTC)Chakra's pov? Hmm. That would be interesting.
I don't think the Hat really looks deep enough to see past Eddie's amnesia. He'd see the kid doesn't remember, but he's also got two dozen other kids to sort and that Eddie's happy and would be perfect for Slytherin.
Blue? Alright. So he's got blueish eyes and short, shaggy brown hair, he's well-fed and sleek, and no scar on his forehead. And doesn't remember anything before the day he woke up in Arthur's care (no outside magic there; just a traumatized kid trying to protect himself from horrific memories). And I'm not sure yet at what point Eames realizes who Arthur's stray used to be.
I should probably figure that out.

Date: 2012-02-02 01:02 am (UTC)I've gotten it so that there's ten kids in each house, except for Slytherin, which has eleven. But, normal schools don't hav even numbers like that, right? And Gryffindor should have one less, since Harry's not there.
Right?
ETA: Gryffindor now has nine, as does Hufflepuff. Ravenclaw has ten, Slytherin eleven. Does that sound better?
