Someone please tell me I can't write a Merlin/Harry Potter AU where Merlin is Emerys Donahue and Arthur is Arthur Cornwallis, and they've been reincarnated without their memories, and Emerys is sorted into Slyterin because while he's as loyal as a Hufflepuff, and courageous as a Gryffindor, and oh, he does love to learn, his overwhelming urge to keep those he loves safe no matter the cost outshines all his other qualities. The Hat knows who he was; Hogwarts herself adores him, because he trained her founders.

Arthur is the Hufflepuffiest Hufflepuff there ever was. He's tiny and adorable. He's an easy target for bullies, and that's how he and Emerys meet: Arthur's been cornered by three Gryffindors the year ahead of Harry Potter (so, four years ahead of Arthur&Emerys), and Emery's happens along. He's also tiny at this point, and he knows he should keep walking; no reason in the world to help a Hufflepuff, especially from Gryffindors.

But. But.

Emerys remembers first, when all those things with Voldemort attacking Hogwarts happen. He's still the most powerful wizard to ever live. Arthur's no slouch himself, now, but he's how Emerys stays grounded.

(I have no idea how to reconcile Harry's 'destiny' with the deus ex machina of Merlin. And I still have that Inception/Harry Potter crossover to finish. And I've seen maybe an episode and a half of Merlin, but I'm reading AU fic for it right now, and I have no idea where the craving come from.)

So, yeah. Someone tell me not to write this, please.

*grin* Sorry, but no can do: You definitely need to write this.

The idea of Hogwarts and the Hat loving this little Slythrine boy because he used to be Merlin is just too adorable. And Arthur as the Hufflepuffiest Hufflepuff ever is perfect.

As for the deus ex machina factor of having Merlin, maybe just give them different destinies? Harry has his destiny of defeating Voldemort while Arthur and Merlin have their destiny of picking up the pieces and getting the wizarding world back in working order.

Except Merlin wouldn't want to let someone else deal with Voldemort, not since he has the power himself.

And, yeah. Hogwarts loves Merlin. That helps with the bullies, until all of his powers wake up.

That's why I want Merlin at Hogwarts at the same time as Harry - so he can talk to the Triwizard dragons. And possibly set them free.

... I think I've decided that Emerys is not the same Merlin, and doesn't really give a fuck about Voldemort, as long as Voldemort leaves the ones he loves alone.

I don't think it would be out of character to highlight the pragmatist in Emerys. In the TV show (of which I've only seen the first season), there were all sorts of cultural inequities that Emerys mostly ignored, instead focusing on keeping Arthur safe.

Of course, in Voldemort threatens Arthur, then he'll be in serious trouble.

I realized as I writing today that the story has become much darker than my original idea.

I've only seen about four episodes, so you've done better than me. But I read a lot of fic, and I've long enjoyed the Arthurian myths/retellings.

As someone who loves 1) Merlin; 2) Harry Potter; and 3) your fic, I believe this is less a "no you can't" moment for me and much more a time to offer you cookies. Look, see, I brought one for you to try, just for sharing the plot bunny with us. Go ahead, enjoy it. There can be lots more where this comes from. And whether or not you write this fic, I encourage you to watch more Merlin so that you may have other ideas in this fandom and write them in the future.

*hee* I do have the next part of 'a taste of lightning' started; it's Joe's pov, talking with Duncan about Ash&his boys. And along with your Darcy idea, I've jotted a note about Fyrstr thinking about the Horsemen while watching Van&Gunnar act afool.

As to HP/Inception... I haven't added anything since I told you it was almost 2000 words. I ran into a brick wall regarding what I want to Harry to do about accents.

As for accents, since you're trying to make him un-Harry-like, an American accent would probably be an additional way of misleading people? Just a thought.

He starts out with a generic American accent (like Arthur's), and then, when he's hanging out with the twins on the train, his accent shifts until he sounds kinda like Eames. And then again, in the Slytherin boys' dormitory. So.

But just keeping it American the whole time would actually wipe out most of the promblem I had. Hmm...
