So, I'm working on Merlin's second year at Hogwarts.

If Umbridge dies a month into Harry's fifth year, how is canon changed?

I don't think Harry's got scars at that point, Weasley twins don't bail out, probably no Quidditch ban - I'm not 100% on that one - so Ron wouldn't try out. She had the locket Horcrux, so you'd need to find a new home for it, or another way of them locating it in her stuff. Uhmm.....

Or figure out how and when she got hold of the locket in the first place, because I cannot remember, and if that is a thing that in canon happens after Harry's fifth year starts...

I remember very little, but I think Sirius threw it out during the cleaning of Grimmauld Place, Kreacher tried to keep it because of the Regalus Black connection and Mundungus stole and sold it but OotP isn't my favorite book, so *shrugs*

If Merlin's in the house while they're cleaning, he might figure out something's funky about it if he sees it.

Sirius might not die. I'd have to reread to figure out how much Umbridge was involved in the chain of events leading to Sirius dying, though.

At the very least, Harry might have been able to talk to a teacher about his dream/vision of Sirius, instead of rabbiting off (although he'd probably have done it anyway...).

Was Umbridge involved in Dumbledore being out of the school?

Being as she's Umbridge? Almost certainly.

I miss being able to answer questions like this definitively. Not enough to actually proceed with my series reread, though, it's been in progress for three weeks and I haven't even gotten to Harry buying his wand.

I hear you on that! I'd love to do a re-read of the adult hardcovers that I bought in a boxset but there are so many others to read in the meantime... *curses Christmas and job-at-the-bookstore* :P

Oh hells yeah, she was involved with D being Awol. Dumbledore's Army - he took credit for creating and training the kids in Dark Arts Defense in Harry's place and the Ministry - after being alerted to it by Umbridge and her Slytherin spies - took it as Dumbledore making preparations for war on the Ministry.

Hagrid went too because of her, near the end of the year -Astronomy finals as a matter of fact. His being half giant was enough.

Dumbledore wouldn't have had to leave. The trio had the DA club going, which was against the rules Umbitch set up. (No unauthorized school gatherings, all of which she had to approve.) Plus the kids were calling it "DA" which some of the kids referred to as "Dumbledore's Army", which Umbridge definitely saw as a threat to her authority/ Dumbledore trying to usurp her authority.

So the kids could have continued to meet on their own, or might not have set up the DA club if the new DADA teacher met with the trio's approval.

There also wouldn't have been the clamp down on the communications between kids and adults. Harry could have sent owl post to Sirius, or floo-chatted with him withough worry over Umbridge checking his post or listening in on the floo.

If Umbrdige vanished, would Fudge freak out, assume a conspiracy, and try to shut down the school? Or would he just send someone even worse?

Dunno who at the time he could've gotten that was worse, but sure, yeah, he probably would've flipped his wig.
