Bones

So, I just spent the past couple weeks watching Bones seasons 3 - 9. I'd previously seen 3 - 6; the first episode I ever saw was "The Beaver in the Otter," 4.23, on accident while at the beach. I was bored and flipping channels and caught the climatic scene where Sweets figures out who the killer is and refuses to tell Brennan how. I had no idea what the show was but Sweets completely caught my attention, so I tracked down everything available at the time (both after I figured out what the show was and who Sweets was).

I tried watching season 1, I really did, but I just honestly didn't care about anyone, so I switched to season 3 - lo and behold, I cared about people. Sweets is far and away my favorite character, but I seem to cycle through fandoms (and I never watched Bones live) so the show moved on.

But, as I said - I cycle through fandoms. I have favorites that I come back to. And I was recently in a Sweets mood, so I decided to watch the whole thing (well, not seasons 1 & 2).

So can someone explain to me how I got all the way to the season 9 finale and suddenly didn't care anymore? I think it might be because I sort of hate over-arching conspiracies? Also, of course, there's the fact that I know they're killing Sweets in the very next episode.

I'm not sure what it is, but I know I can rewatch seasons 3&4 happily. I think it was adorable how Sweets lived with Booth&Brennan, even though there are so many problems with inconsistent writing (which plagues me throughout fandoms, but that's the writer in me seeing so many ways they coulda done it better). Also, the preaching episodes are kinda funny.

Anyway. If anyone out there watched season 10 live, was there any hint they'd be killing Sweets? I'm curious now and there doesn't seem to be much of an active fandom for me to ask.

I had absolutely no warning and was pretty convinced it was a fake-out.

Bones started losing me when Booth and Brennan became a thing. That always felt forced to me. I've been watching for some of the interns and Angela and Hodgins, but I accidentally lost about half this season and I haven't really cared yet.

For me, Brennan/Booth was always going to be a thing, and I don't really care about either one of them. Like I said, I really only started watching in season 3, and by that point, it seemed like everybody in the show was shipping them, so *shrugs*.

My favorite intern was definitely Vincent, and Angela/Hodgins are adorable.

There are some things Bones does so well, and then others, I just shake my head in bewilderment.

I've been watching Bones from the beginning, and season 10 has three episodes left. Some of the earlier seasons are my favorite, and I often find myself watching reruns on TNT.

There really was no warning, on the show, about Sweets being killed...until that very episode. I knew it was coming because I had seen an interview with John Francis Daley where he said he asked to leave the show for several months to focus on directing a movie (remake of National Lampoon’s Vacation). After talking it through with whoever on Bones, it was decided that instead of leaving Sweets in limbo, they would kill him off to give closure to the fans.

So, as someone who's watched the whole thing, was them killing Sweets better than putting Zach in the institution and then forgetting about him?

I would have to say yes (even though I never really liked Zach and really didn't like that storyline). Everything with Zach was left in limbo. He appeared in one or two other episodes and was only mentioned when new interns were brought in as a comparison. Aside from him being institutionalized and then escaping and being brought back, you're left wondering if anything else ever happened to him or if he was just there for the rest of his natural life.

With Sweets death, there is closure, even though it's sad. We're not left wondering if he will randomly pop up. With Daisy having had his baby, it's been hinted that we MIGHT see flashbacks/memories of Sweets in the coming season.

But with that said, the new guy, Agent Aubrey, is growing on me. He's a bit of a mixture of Sweets, Booth, and squint.
