tigriswolfI'm working on a merpeople story, right, so I'm checking books out from the library as research, to see how other authors have written merpeople, and SO MANY of the books are in first person. It's so annoying. I just can barely stand it anymore.

So for the merpeople stuff, I've been skimming to see how the merpeople are described. But I've noped out of most of the books. :(

Date: 2016-07-21 12:37 am (UTC)I'm not sure why I stopped liking it, because I used to not care. I think it's probably the same reason I don't trust memoirs that use direct quote conversations without saying somewhere that the conversations have been recreated.
The merpeople thing is a 1D AU that's at 4000+ words, inspired by an adorable fanart I saw on tumblr. It's a total WIP up at comment_fic at the moment. And it's been such a struggle!
Porn is not my thing, so please don't mind if I pass on that?

Date: 2016-07-22 12:20 am (UTC)Anyway, so I've put zero thought into how merpeople reproduce, but I think it's probably more like fish than mammals, with eggs and stuff.
Anyway, I figure they have the usual human top and fish bottom, with the standard two-finned tail. The tail color can be anything but it passes through family. But they also have fins that run along the side of their tail, about where human hips are, and fins on their forearms (and this is where I wish I could draw). I figure all the ones are the same color though vary in shade.
They also each have a magical gift called 'talent,' though the powers aren't entirely unique.

Date: 2016-07-22 04:00 pm (UTC)Magical. Like, Harry can create and control fire, which is oh so useful in the ocean. He's gotten teased about that since the other merkids realized. Though, some can probably sing like sirens or something. Harry's stepdad can speak any language, so I suppose they're not all magical.
