Every time I think about the fact that Louisiana created a pet evacuation plan because so many people refused to leave without their animals during Katrina, I tear up.
I just came from Walmart, and there was a couple purchasing pallets of cat and dog food to help feed the displaced animals and I teared up. I'm so happy that people are remembering about the pets, too.
One of them had medical issues prior to this whole mess that have gone untreated. I'm sure that being submerged in dirty flood water did not help at all. They've both put on much needed weight since Mom's been taking care of them.
(I'm not sure why my aunt, who is cool in almost every other way, is so bad at taking care of them. But the first time I saw Bear in months, he looks like a dog from those rescue commercials and it's such a cognitive dissonance. But of all her siblings, Mom is the only one who seems to have gotten the 'take proper care of animals' gene, and of the next generation, I did, too.)
