"I was so proud, y'know, top of my class even though we moved around so much. Valedictorian, even though we'd only been there a few months. And I wanted you there, I didn't care about Dad. But you. M'big brother. Even when I was angry at you, you were always so cool, so amazin'. You're my hero, Dean, always have been."
He wipes at his eyes, pushing through the sob caught in his thoat. "Always will be."
Just like he hasn't for days, Dean doesn't answer.

did Tarsus IV happen in the reboot 'verse?
Date: 2016-09-01 02:15 am (UTC)Leonard doesn't mention it, doesn't ask. He knows enough to know the implications, and unless Jim ever tells him - and he knows Jim won't, most likely. He's come to love the kid, but he knows Jim'll leave him behind when he goes on to bigger and better things. The kid's got greatness in him, after all. And Leonard's just a bitter doctor who's afraid of space and only joined Starfleet because there was nothing else to do.
Then the Kobayashi Maru, and Nero. Vulcan. Leonard turns around and everything is different.
Jim isn't, though. Jim still makes comments he thinks no one catches, and he still does little things that show he’s known hunger, he’s known want, he’s known terror, he’s known grief. Leonard notices the rest of the bridge crew notice, but no one (to his knowledge) ever brings it up.
Leonard would’ve waited forever, imagining horrible things, but it’s Jim who says one day while he’s bothering Leonard during routine paperwork (which unfortunately comes with being the CMO, and he doesn’t feel right foisting it off on anyone), “Are you ever gonna ask, Bones?”
“Wasn’t plannin’ on it,” Leonard answers without looking up.
“Do you want to know?” The words are soft. Aching.
“If you want to tell me,” Leonard says. He truly doesn’t want to hear but just because Jim’s brought it up, he knows Jim needs to talk about it.
“You heard of Tarsus IV?” Jim murmurs.
Leonard sucks in a breath. Jim laughs, short and sharp.
He listens in silence as years of grief, years of hate, pour out of the best man he’s ever known, and he knows that he’ll have to let it go until Jim brings it up again, if he ever does.
(He does.)

Date: 2016-09-01 04:07 pm (UTC)"Do you ever think we should've gone into the field together?" Neal asks early one morning, murmuring into the cellphone Peter doesn't know he has. Peter and El are still asleep tangled together upstairs and Neal trying to decide what to fix for breakfast.
Eliot laughs softly. Something clinks on his end, and he's probably fixing breakfast, too, for that thief and that hacker he's adopted. (Parker is a legend, and while he has no personal experience with Hardison, Mozzie has complained about and praised enough for Neal to understand how good the guy is.)
"We wouldn't have lasted, little brother," Eliot tells him now, 20 years after they went their separate ways. They've both attained mastery in their art, have both fallen and found their ways back. "Now, maybe we could work together without fucking up, but back then? No."
"Yeah," Neal agrees.
They move on to discussing breakfast, and Eliot walks him through something fancier than he would've tried on his own, and when they hang up, he's satisfied that Parker and Hardison understand how amazing Eliot is, that they'll take care of him. He also knows that Eliot still doesn't trust Peter, but he'd really like Elizabeth.
He brings the tray up to Peter and El, and it's a truly spectacular morning that is almost as amazing as the night before.
(In two weeks, Agents Hagen and Thomas stop by Peter's office. Neal just sighs and texts Eliot, Happy now?
He's completely horrified that Eliot replies with :).
