The gun roars, Diana gasps, and Sam freezes.

Dean topples over, hits the ground with a muted thump.

Sheriden grins and his eyes glint with madness.

After a moment, Sam remembers to breathe.

And when he moves, neither cop sees him.

Thinking back later, Diana can’t remember what happens next. It’s a blur, hazy, like a half-forgotten nightmare she really doesn’t want to recall.

But it ends with Sheriden dead and the brothers gone.

It ends with Sheriden maimed and no evidence of the Winchesters at all.

All she remembers is rushing wind and screaming fire, the earth trembling beneath her and water pouring from the sky.

After, when everything quiets, Sheriden's corpse is alone by the van.

She has no explanation. The department hushes everything up, covers it all. She’s given another partner and the world continues on.

No one ever really figures out what happened. No one digs too deep; Sheriden is written off and the Winchesters were escaping a murderous police officer.

All she remembers are things that couldn’t have happened. Ghosts? Someone with the ability to control nature? Impossible.

She can’t believe it. Her mind was playing tricks. Had to be.

But still… sometimes she wonders.
