so i’ll be making a presentation in my writing class about how to use fanfiction for creative writing and student engagement

anyone got a quote for me about how fanfiction helped them learn to write / encouraged them / anything else along these lines?

Fanfiction was the precursor to original writing for me, and helped me hone plot structure, emotion and characterization. It allows you to imagine what would follow if such-and-such happened with characters and settings familiar to you.

I hate creative writing classes. There is always some ass, who criticizes everything or makes it all about them (and that includes instructors) and wastes time and money, so I taught myself to write, writing fan fiction. I learned a lot about what makes a story work for free.

Fanfiction helped me to hone my writing style, 100 word drabbles helped me to discipline myself and avoid being overly wordy.

Posting to fic comms helped me get constructive criticism in terms of research/characterisation without anyone attacking me or being unkind.

Fanfic helped me to find the right writing community for my needs, and enabled me to help others.
