Have you tried Genevieve Cogman's Invisible Library series? A kickass steampunk Librarian working for a mysterious, seemingly sentient Library goes to all manner of AU worlds to get rare books. Avoid the third in the series, the Burned Page, but otherwise it should be up your street if you like action, genuine emotion, interesting characters and worldbuilding.
I was going to rec the new Tamora Pierce Carthak set Tempests and Slaughter, but there is a tiger that... bad things happen to, although s/he isn't a main character it still sucks and might be triggering :(
