Sometimes, he can ignore the voices.  Replace them with memories.  If he pretends long enough... ah, but who is he kidding?

He knows. They know. And he can't ever unknow. Denial is easy but not strong enough to truly protect him.

Sometimes, even as he ignores them, the stench of fire fills the air around him and he inhales it with a grimace.

-

"You did your best," they say as one. "And we commend you for that."

He closes his eyes and turns away, rolls over and wraps his arms about himself. He doesn't acknowledge them and he doesn't react. When a hand trails along his bare back, he doesn't flinch.

"Such a brave boy," they murmur. "We cannot wait until you are ours."

Even in his mind, he doesn't think a response. He can't handle the disappointment of being wrong anymore.

-

How long it's been, he doesn't know. Doesn't wonder.

Long enough.

He bets he lost his mind somewhere along the way. Only him and them and fire and fear--only helplessness and impotent fury.

All the anger in the world cannot help him. Not while he's alone. He can't block out their voices for more than a heartbeat, and he can't hear his brother's voice at all.

His memories are fading.

-

"It is useless," they say. "You are weakening, day by day. If you become ours, you will never again be weak."

He hasn't spoken in so long, he doubts he even has a voice anymore.

He hasn't spoken since that November night. Fire roars in his memory and Jessica screams his name. Dean shudders and falls, eyes wide with disbelief.

He can't be sure he wasn't responsible. He can't be sure it wasn't his fault. He just can't remember... and that hurts most of all.

-

"You are ours, lovely boy," they whisper. A hand caresses his face and he tightly closes his eyes. "Can you not feel the fire in your blood?"

Dean, he thinks with a sob, why haven't you saved me?

He hears their laughter, deep and long. "He will never come for you, child." Lips press against his skin. "You saw to that in November."

And he just can't be sure.

Oh, so angsty and heartbreaking. Poor, insane, power-ridden Sam, and Dean who's probably gone ... my boys! *whimpers*

Nicely done.

Remember that long _Devour_ crossover that's slash so you won't read it? I'm writing the prequel and the third part right now, and Dean's gonna survive the whole thing.

But see, since I'm not reading it, it doesn't count. *g* I demand happy gen fic. (And yeah, I know you wrote some recently, but still ... you kill him more often than not. *whimpers*)

If he quit dying so prettily, I'd quit killing him. Honest.

Do you mean tags to this ficlet, or just standalones?

And stop killing them!

That story only counts as "happy" if we define "happy" as they're still alive. *g*

But wait ... won't tagging them give away the endings to readers?

Huh. I thought I saw tags at the start of some people's journals.

Depends on the design, maybe?

Huh. Interesting. And I bet that you have far more dead!brother stories than stories in which they're alive. *g*

_Happy_ gen fic? But that's no fun. *whines* I have to be in the right mood.

*g* I understand.

I don't kill him _that_ often. Now you've got me wanting to go back and count how often I leave the poor dear dead.

I'm pretty sure he's dead in the vast majority of your stories. :) Or maybe my brain is so traumatized by how often you kill him that it's exaggerating. *g*

Just went over and read, and accidentally left anonymous feedback. *slaps self* But yes, the boys are alive and there's a fair amount of happiness in this one. :)

ugh. the fact that it's Sam who killed Dean (or that it was Sam's fault at least) makes it more hurt-y and so so sad.
