It’s a dream and he knows it, but he can’t wake up.

They’re back at that cabin, that damned cabin, the little building where everything changed. They’re back, he and Sammy pinned to the walls while NotDad tears out their souls and laughs. They’re backed, trapped and breaking, being eaten alive and unable to escape, to move, to fight—

Except with words, as he discovered, when he opened his mouth and condemned himself, determined only to keep NotDad’s focus from Sammy.

And in this dream, as in every dream before, NotDad turns and speaks and he listens. He’s laid bare before the thing that killed his mother, the demon with yellow eyes, the demon of fire and lies—he’s laid bare, wide open, and all he can do is speak. All he can do is attempt to hurt something that should be beyond hurt, so he does.

And for his gumption, the price is to be his life. The claws of will and fury tear through him, cutting deep into his flesh and his soul, leaving him only the strength to be weak, the ability to beg. And he does, he begs without pride or expectation, only asks for Sammy’s sake.

But this is a dream, not memory. This is a dream, like all the dreams before. NotDad’s eyes stay gold and he feels his heart slowing, feels his lungs failing, feels everything going cold. He watches as satisfaction crosses NotDad’s face.

You were the linchpin, he hears, like every single other time. You were what kept him from becoming fully mine. NotDad leans in close and whispers in his ear, And, now, Dean? Now you know.

-

He wakes, like every other time, with Dad’s secret echoing in his head.

All it will take, dear boy, is for you to die.
