It’s the easiest thing he’s ever done. Easier than setting bones on fire, easier than Latin chants, easier than taking Sammy to the park and sparring with Dad—easy as breathing, and just as instinctual.
He worries for a moment—just one, jagged heartbeat—what that says about him, but he’s got things to do. Gotta get Sammy up, gotta get Dad to safety, have to get gone before the authorities arrive.
He stares at the body for just a second—some guy, some guy possessed by a demon, some guy with no control over his actions. And Dean killed him. Shot him through the head without hesitating, without flinching, without thinking.
Because he was a threat to Sammy. Because he was hurting Sammy. And Dean grips Sam, pulls him up, supports most of his weight just until Sam’s balanced again. Helps Sam over to Dad and they collect him, too, then are swiftly on their way.
Dean doesn’t look back. Can’t. Sam’s too important, and Dad, and getting somewhere safe before the demon comes.
It’s the easiest thing he’s ever done, taking care of his family—no matter the cost. Easier than flirting, easier than breathing—so completely easy.

Oh, Dean *sigh* I have no idea how you manage to put so much angst into 200 words...

Nicely done. I like how you turned this to show how something so troubling is the easiest thing, because protecting his family is so natural to him.

So much of Dean's character expressed so simply, yet so deeply. Dean admitting to himself that he should be worried about how easy it was to kill the demon-possessed man is a great forerunner to his later admission to Sam. For Dean though, it always comes down to his family - and that's easy. Thank you - beautiful.

It really is the most important thing to him, and so of course it doesn't matter what, or how much, it costs him.

Oh, Dean.

Stuffed.

(Why yes, I did just get home from gorging myself at one of my favorite restaurants.)

Or how about ...

Glazed.

Acrid.

Lull.

Overhead.

Worn.

Beveled.

Tanked.

Did any of that help? *g* I'm so sleepy and full right now that my brain isn't working well.

I settled on "Shining Silver, Gleaming Gold," though that has nothing to do with the story.

Cool!

Isn't it a bit late to be out? (Half past midnight where I am, though I guess you could be in a different timezone.)

It was two hours earlier here. :) Actually, we got back around 9 p.m. my time from dinner; I wrote you at 10:30 p.m.

But I may have to write something for each of those words, since you were kind enough to provide them.

Yay!

What's a fandom you like?

SPN would be lovely.

You wouldn't like "Shining Silver, Gleaming Gold." *hee* It contains slash, wincest, character death, and the closest to a sex scene I've ever done.

Yeah, I'd take a pass on that one. *g*

Whenever I hit a wall on something I'm writing(or need a break from the Hell that is studying for Logic) I'll pick a word and write a drabble! *glee* I love having a plan.

And it sounds like a good plan. More fic is always a good plan. :)

Such a DEAN snippet. Love how you demonstrate the way Dean's disturbed by the ease without actually saying it.

By the way, I read your story about Dean being lost during Katrina yesterday.

You made me cry.

Yeah, I said it.

You got a real gift for killing the boy off!
