I take into my hands
The burden of your life
I choose to kill
And I choose those who stay alive
It is my right
And don’t you dare try to take it—
She threw down the pen in disgust. The words just weren’t coming. Ever since she began her quest, the poetry flowed slower, harder—barely a trickle now.
From the time she was a girl, the words appeared to her, easily and without effort. Had she wanted, she could have been world-famous by now, not some nurse in a backwater prison.

She tapped the pen on her desk, biting her lip. What was a good word?
Those bastards ruined it all, her life and her future and her hopes. Killed Danny the night before their wedding, raped her for hours—
She shuddered and wrapped her arms around herself.
Darling, I visit your grave in autumn,
watching the leaves fall.

The blood I’ve spilt, the lives I’ve quenched,
The dreams I’ve drowned with such gentle poison—
In your name I’ve done this, all these things—
Forgive me—
