Title: there hath past away a glory from the earth
Fandom: Star Trek reboot
Disclaimer: not my characters; title from Wordsworth
Warnings: AU
Pairings: none stated
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 260
Point of view: third

Notes: this is the very first Trek fic I started, right after I saw the movie for the very first time. Seven viewings and a couple months later, it’s finally done.

James Tiberius Kirk died on Delta Vega, but that is not where everything went wrong.

Two worlds lost, half a fleet destroyed, and finally the misplaced ship was blown to pieces, scattered among the stars. With both Earth and Vulcan gone, the Federation crumbled.

Over twelve billion sentient lifeforms murdered for no reason any of the survivors knew.   Trillions more dead in the wars that ensued. Not to mention all the rest killed as the planets imploded.

James Tiberius Kirk died on Delta Vega, ripped apart by a predator that was never documented.   He should never have been on that planet; he should have been in the captain’s chair of the USS Enterprise—but that is not where everything went wrong.

Everything went wrong on the day of his birth, when a Romulan mining vessel commanded by a mad captain who had yet to be born attacked the Kelvin and rewrote the destiny of an entire universe.

Sometimes, Dr. Leonard McCoy(no one calls him Bones anymore) wonders what would’ve happened if Spock hadn’t marooned Jim on that ball of ice, if the Enterprise hadn’t gone to rendezvous with the fleet, if Nero hadn’t destroyed the Earth. But that way lies madness and he’s one of the few doctors left who can help the survivors of Earth. He needs to be here now, not pondering what-ifs and could-have-beens.

He’s a doctor, damnit, not a dreamer.

(James Tiberius Kirk died on Delta Vega, and an old misplaced Vulcan with him, and no one knows that’s not how it was supposed to go.)

So...what is spocks viewpoint to realize that Kirk died on that planet that way. What would be his feelings to realize that Kirk was right and he didn't listen? Also, to find out that his elder self was on Delta Vega either alive or dead? What would happen if the elder spock told the young spock what Kirk could've been?

Yep. I am in a major angsty mood after reading this so had to share the thoughts you inspired.

Oh god, this is what I absolutely refuse to think about when the odds of everything that happens in the movie actually happening that way come to mind (which is basically all the time).

How do you put all that useless agony and regret in 260 words? In six words, here - no one calls him Bones anymore - or an old misplaced Vulcan? *shivers* Oh god.

That is so enthralling... in a creepy sort of way. I like the darkness of it all.

That was really great, as usual. My only critique is the parentheses at the very end. the "doctor not a dreamer" line was such a fantastic ending, that the parentheses stuff is implied and doesn't need to be stated. ...unless of course that was a restatement of a prompt or something, in which case, you should put that with the author's notes or something.

But otherwise, it was perfect. I've been reading your stuff for a while, and you are really amazing at keeping things succinct and conveying the emotional experiences very well. I think the strongest part of your writing is that you don't convey to dramatic enough of a situation. You let things be wistful or apathetic when the story calls for it as opposed to feeling the need to make everything super!angst, pain, drama, jubilation,or extreme happiness,etc... You write with a very efficient turn of phrase, which makes your stuff very poetic, and this was no exception.

It really makes me want to read longer, character driven stuff by you. Like, with chapters. hehe. Just sayin. :)

but all the same, I can never get enough of your drabbles.

Kudos!
