Prompt: any or no pairing, AU where McCoy is a veterinarian

Len's dog got hit by a car during his first year of highschool. Up till that point, he'd wanted to be a doctor, just like his daddy.

When the vet not only kept Oreo alive, but saved his leg, too, Len knew his life-goal had changed.

o0o

His fifth year into the practice he took over from old Doc Callum, a cowboy passing through calls him for help. The kid sounds panicked on the phone, demands to speak to the doctor, so Gaila, his right hand and the reason his business actually succeeds, since Len thinks most people are useless and should be shot, passes the phone off to him.

The cowboy's horse stumbled and threw him, and now the horse is limping, and he's the only friend in the whole wide world the cowboy has, so will Dr. McCoy please please pretty please come look at the horse and make him better?

What the hell, Len decides. He's more of a small-animal veterinarian, but he's always liked horses.

o0o

Sometimes, Len thinks that if he'd known how taking that call would change his life, he'd have hung up the phone and gone happily on his way without all the drama and excitement Jim Kirk embodies.

Most of the time, though, he knows Jim also embodies all the happiness he could ever need or want.

The cowboy isn't passing through anymore; he stays with Len, at Len's house and in Len's heart, and sometimes, Gaila tells everyone, Dr. McCoy even smiles for him.

Fandom: Leverage/White Collar

Warnings: vague spoilers for Leverage?
Pairings: Peter/Elizabeth
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 425
Point of view: third
Prompt: Leverage/White Collar, Neal, Peter, Leverage Team, "You knew they were working a con, and you didn't stop them?" "Nope." "Why not, Peter?"

Fifteen years ago, when Peter was in Russia for his first deep-cover case, when he was about to get shot in the head after being made, a young guy burst through the door, killed all the enemy, and helped Peter to his feet. The kid was bleeding, swaying in place, and spoke Russian fluently, though his words were slurring together and Peter could barely understand him.

They helped each other to the nearest phone and Peter didn't report that anyone else was involved, even though the kid didn't ask him to.

o0o

Eleven years ago, Peter mentored a punk kid through a community program. That kid was probably the smartest person he ever met, except El and later Neal. He tried to teach the kid why the law was important, but he's pretty sure the kid only learned how to break it.

o0o

Nine years ago, Peter busted a corrupt general after three of his subordinates reported various inconsistencies in his finances. It should have been an internal investigation on the military's part, but an outside party also had some interesting intel.

Elizabeth's cousin Portia thanked Peter for his time, trying to keep the bruised half of her face away from him. Peter told her that she was still beautiful and had done the right thing.

o0o

Eight-and-a-half years ago, Peter grabbed the wrist reaching into his pocket. He turned to glare down at a tiny blonde woman. She glared right back, jerking away. He let her go and, making sure his wallet was still place with all his cards and cash, asked her if she wanted to get a meal with him.

After a long moment, she asked what was in it for him.

He said his wife wouldn't be happy if he were impolite simply because someone tried to rob him.

She laughed and said she'd like to meet his wife.

That afternoon, he had lunch with two beautiful ladies and El made a new friend.

o0o

Four years ago, Peter's step-brother's cousin's son died. Peter went to the funeral and watched a man he'd always respected fall apart.

o0o

Peter heard about Nate Ford's team, a band of thieves that did what the law couldn't, that stepped in where the law failed.

And when they got involved in one of Peter's cases, he knew what he wanted to do, but not what he should.

He asked El. She told him she'd already invited Portia and Parker to supper, and she wanted to meet his little brother.

When Neal asked why he didn't bust Nate Ford's team, Peter shrugged.

hear me, boy, hear me and know--i've won, you've lost, all is done and this is it

It's a beautiful garden. A beautiful day. The sunrise is brilliant, the garden blooming by its light, and the birds sing, a chorus ascending into the sky...

So beautiful.

It's all a lie.

say yes, say yes, your brother already has, i'm him and he's me and we're together in this skin, say yes, say yes, quit fighting—you'll never win

He is the Prince of Lies. You've already experienced the worst, so nothing else matters.

You won't give in because that's the last card you have to play. His victory isn't complete, no matter how beautiful the garden, how brilliant the sunrise, or how loudly the birds sing.

He's already won everything else, so you'll deny him this.

i can wait, boy, i can wait forever.

but you can't.

: something vital
Fandom: The Losers movieverse

Warnings: somewhat darkish!Jensen; child abuse
Pairings: none
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 390
Point of view: third
Prompt: Any, Any, Learning how to hurt

Some people are just born wrong. Missing something vital, something important. Something that lets them connect with others, to understand and empathize about pain and fear.

Dad liked to drink, and Dad liked to hit, and Mom always got out of the way, out of the house. Sometimes, she forgot to take Jessie and Jake with her.

Jessie tried to shield Jake, and when Jake got big enough, he returned the favor. And after Mom died--accident or suicide, Jake didn't know and he didn't care--when Dad decided he wanted Jessie to take Mom's place, Jake used thirteen years of lessons and killed Dad.

And he made it hurt. Made Dad beg and whimper and scream. He took his time because the neighbors didn't care, had never cared, and when Jessie came home at dawn, quiet and solemn, Dad was gone. The house was scrubbed clean.

Jake loved his sister, but she was the only one in the world.

Two years of highschool, one year of college—way ahead of the curve—and he joined the army, to make sure Jessie would be provided for, and to learn. He learned many things in the army.

Then came Colonel Clay's team, the best of the best, the scariest and most dangerous men he'd ever met. And he pulled on the mask that hid his rage from Dad, the joker and the clown, the dumb smart kid.

They had Roque to for intimidating and Cougar for hidden danger, and they needed a tech to be unassuming. So Jake became that.

He should have seen Roque's betrayal coming.

After Jilly's soccer game, they stashed Jolene, baby!Pooch, Jessie, and Jilly in the same place, and while Pooch, Cougar, and Clay scouted out every possible entrance and exit, and Aisha called up a man too terrified of her to ever think of double-crossing her, Jake settled himself in an out-of-the-way corner and followed a trail that maybe two other people in the world could find.

That night, he kissed Jessie and Jilly goodbye. He left the others a note.

He's been Jensen the tech for a while now, but it was time to let Jake out to play, the boy who killed his father.

He really couldn't wait to meet Max face-to-face. He only hoped Clay and Aisha would forgive him for taking the kill.
